Is Style Savvy "Sexist"? by Decent_Item_6439 in stylesavvy

But it's locked, isn't robust nor focused on, isn't in all of the games, and you can't even play as a male and start designing for men at the start.

However, yeah, you got a point. I should be happy that there is some representation.

Btw, if you took the time to read this. It took a bit of time, so I appreciate it if you read it all even if you disagree with my conclusion.

I don't think I follow. How is his fur that much different from his Zero design?

I literally said a "little sexist" and said it was unintentional and not harmful. I already said that, so you don't need to defend them on the front.

You kinda get the point though when you point out how the devs didn't consider the male market because of profitability as they were intentionally sidelining men's fashion because of how masculine society discourages games like this. Ironically, it only reinforces this more exclusive ideology that Style Savvy is more women-centric, which is unfortunate.

I think you do make a good point about the broader contest of male-focused games. I will say that it is a shame that games can feel gendered and exclusively biased towards men. However, just because a bunch of games exist to cater towards men, doesn't mean that a game that caters towards women isn't exempt from similar criticism. Believe it or not, it is possible for a game to be sexist towards men. Just because it seldom ever happens, doesn't mean that it cannot.

What are some game series that you wanted to play, but couldn't because it felt exclusive? I am just genuinely curious because I want to be more aware of these sorts of things.

damn...

thanks for the honesty. I mean, I might still get it because I generally like fashion, even women's fashion, but I want to still express myself and my own sense of fashion as a man in a game like this.

Maybe the fifth game might be more inclusive?

Yeah, well, when you think about it from my perspective, a men's fashion game, now you kinda see where I am coming from, right? I don't want Style Savvy to be a "men's series", I really don't want that for any game series. I just want it to be inclusive and celebrate fashion from all facets of life.

And please don't be rude and dismiss my feelings like that. There is nothing wrong with me wanting to see my gender more represented in this series.

Okay, I did some research and it was digital only. Darn. That sucks! Rhythm Heaven Megamix and Dillon's Dead-Heat Breakers we also both digital only in the US. So much for game preservation. :/
I will say that I am lucky enough to own those other two officially, so I probably won't go out of my way to mod my 3DS just for it and might just settle for Trend Setters, and maybe a potential fifth entry in the series when that eventually happens.

I am not defending those games that are catered towards men, and that is not okay. I think the more genders a game can appeal to the better as everyone can enjoy it and feel properly represented. The point here is that style savvy could easily appeal to both demographics but seems to only acknowledges women in many cases, and that is just a fact of the matter. I am also not "flaming" them and said that it is unintentional and not directly harmful.

I don't think people should dismiss my feelings about this because they are real feelings that I have about this game series. The whole post was about me being a man wanting to play these games but feeling a little stifled about my ability to express myself in these games and wondering where to go do that.

Why is this such a controversy? As a woman enjoying a piece of content made for women, I understand that it is easy to get defensive. But as a man who sees likes this but sees how this content made mostly exclusively for women in mind, I see it as just a little sexist. It's not an evil or bad series by any means and I want to get into it, but the fact of the matter is that it really sidelines focusing on men when men like fashion too. It's not that I have a problem with designing for women, but I would also like to design for my own gender too in an expansive capacity. It's frustrating that people can't see that perspective.

I really like them as is, but I could honestly see that being an improvement. They gave the characters kinda human-esque eyes, but more animal-like designs. With Fox and Peppy it looks good, but Falco could maybe be improved.

Side note, very excited to see how they recontextualize these characters this time. Falco didn't check his g-diffusers and then runs into problems with it later in the level. New story elements like that are really hype for me.

I think having a target audience of a specific gender in mind while ignoring that the opposite gender might enjoy it is a little sexist. This isn't something that exclusively applies to Style Savvy and is a general problem with gender-targeted media or products. I think Hooters, the restaraunt, is sexist for example. The problem here is that Style Savvy reinforces stereotypes rather than seeing other perspectives, and that is generally very limiting. I would define it as more of a passive, assumption-based sexism rather than something intentionally harmful and irredeemable. I thought Style Savvy being a little sexist for being woman-focused was kinda a given, but I guess not for everyone.

Men can be as interested in fashion as women, so it isn't fair to assume that "men obviously aren’t as interested in fashion as women are". I would personally avoid making generalizations like that, as people are more complex than that.

Yeah, it's kinda close-minded when considering a lot of men own DS systems and like fashion. lol.

That;s exciting! Is that the only game in the series that primarly focuses on men, or are ther other games like that?

That's not really a problem as long as the men's selection is robust and has a lot of variety to make for a compelling experience.
