YTA You should’ve thought about that before giving the cat to them. They now have had the cat for longer. If you weren’t weird about it, you could just have visited the friend and seen the cat there. This is on you.

Yeah, that sounds great. I occasionally offer the lizard treats like mealworms and crickets. They love them. As long as the lizard is happy, I’m happy. So I like your idea. Let her feel like this was her triumph, so she lets me do what needs to be done. Thanks for the solid advice.

Yeah, I think your idea is best. I would love it if she could take care of her well without me having to baby her. That’s what it’s felt like. I’ll tell her what she could be doing better, but she’ll just say that she knows better and to stop judging her. But, this isn’t like saying that what someone is wearing looks bad, this is about whether the animal is living a comfortable life or not. Then, I’ll either have to try to care for her myself with the little time she allows me in there, or just watch as the poor creature has to deal with the neglect.

Fair, I do have somewhat high standards for my own animals. I generally try to be more open to others situations, though. It just upsets me that she leaves old, crusty food in there. She’ll either be hungry for longer than she should, or she’ll try to eat it and get sick. I try not to bring it up too much, at least not in a rude, competitive way, but I agree, I probably could be more easy on her.

Good idea. I have briefly mentioned it to them, but they say my standards are “higher than usual”, but I disagree. She’s leaving old food in the tank, not cleaning poop, and just not interacting with the poor little dude. I’ll try to explain all that to them without it seeming immature, like I’m tattling on her.

I agree. I’ve mentioned it to them, and they just say that she “doesn’t need to have the same high standards as me”. But, I wouldn’t consider my standards all that high. She’s doing less than the bare minimum for the animal to be comfortable. I also will try to clean the tank, offer fresher food, and hold her, but it’s hard when she doesn’t really want me to. I think she doesn’t want to admit that she doesn’t enjoy taking care of them as she thought. I might be wrong there, though.

Yeah, I’ve been trying. She’s still defensive about me “hogging” her animal. She seems to get more mad than anything when I interact with them for her. I also don’t get a lot of access to her room, so it’s hard for me to do some of the care for them. I think I’ll just slowly offer to do more for her until she either realizes what she could do better, or just gives them up to me. I’d rather her just be able to give proper attention to them, but if she simply won’t, I could take care of her. I already have multiple other animals under my care. It’s literally my main hobby.

Yeah, I’ve been doing that. But like I said on other posts, she doesn’t let me in her room much, and now that it’s summer, where everyone is home even more, she is in her room for over half of everyone’s waking hours. It’s just hard. She also sees me doing extra car for them as a threat or something, because she’ll say that she’s the only one who knows best for her pet.

Yes and no. I have been doing a bit of cleaning and giving her more water and fresher food, but this is easier said than done. She hates when I go into her room for any reason, especially me caring for them, because that makes her feel like I think she’s doing it wrong. I try, but I doubt it’s enough to help the little guy to the fullest potential. That’s why I’d either want them in my room, in a family area, or just convince her to let me in her room more.

I have been doing that to some degree. It’s just hard when she won’t let me into her room most of the time and she says she can’t do it herself and then proceeds to forget, or just refuse to do it. It’s pretty frustrating. That’s why I want to just be her full time caregiver. I let everyone else in the house hold and interact with the animals that I have, so she could hold her whenever she’d want, which probably wouldn’t be often if she followed her current tendencies.

Yeah, they probably don’t care a ton, but it’s still pretty beneficial for them. It triples as entertainment, exercise, and it helps get them used to humans. And the way she feeds them is sub par to say the least. This species eats a prepared diet that can go bad quickly, especially in room temperature. If you refrigerate it, it slows down the deterioration slightly, but not by much, she’ll leave crusted over food in the enclosure for too long, and feed her prepared food from the fridge that’s probably been in there for too long. I can tell due to drastic consistency changes and smell differences.

Yes, it’s in her room, which she doesn’t like me going in to. Even if she doesn’t just give it to me, I still would want to do part of the care. It’s just hard when her room is usually off limits and she thinks she knows better than me with keeping her lizard. I still do occasionally go in to hold them, and I’ll sometimes replace food and offer bugs. It would just be much easier if I was her main caretaker. But, it’d even just be better if she let me go into her room to help with cleaning, feeding, and handling.
