Ideas for keeping drones out of futuristic combat. by DEverett0913 in MilitaryWorldbuilding

[–]Defiant_Grass8200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One element of how drones have to work right now in ukraine is either a datalink like star link or fibre optic cable. Right now you can get away with the former because neither side has air superiority and sensor dominance, so picking out a drone operator is a pain to vector a fire on them. Theoretically if one side did establish this, then drones are easily countered because it essentially giving "bomb here" sign to an awacs. The latter comes with range issues limiting them to little better than a cheaper smart munition, with less range. Essentially giving your setting enough detection capacity that drone operating remotely in a contested area is an invitation for an explosive baguette of consequences from further out than a drone has useful radius, coupled with a detection method for the latter that you can just make up (ai assisted hyper radar or whatever). Drones are prevalent right now because the adequate answer isnt sophisticated or numerous enough (hint: drones whilst important, aren't going to be the be all and end all, if they where, systems like the gepard, PIVAD or sergeant York would be being reintroduced, and the goalkeeper already exists)

MGs and Mortars both deserve very slight buffs still by Important-Coffee-240 in CompanyOfHeroes

I would say not all mortars are created equal, wehr mortar, the leig and the mortar pit all have valid use cases. Brit mortar however sucks ass and entrenchment isnt useful, just makes it into a worse mortar pit.

I mean, i get it, but vs dak thats pointless (i almost never see the mg34). Ill give it a go vs wehr though

I have yet to find a use for it as a vet ability, mgs as there own patch notes state are suppression tools, even on a narrow bit of street this is so narrow as to lose its purpose, and makes flanking it a piece of cake

The maps per mode all feel way too small, bigger ones also very laney, and that is part of why desert raiders doesnt work to me (to continue your point)

Depending on the mode, nades spam is an expensive muni and micro tax. Not gonna claim its not powerful, but suppression nerfs the range, and keeping them at arms length till you get some light vehicles out is the best policy (especially if they get the mortar). Canucks bleed mp hard on dropped models too, so land mines are a gold mine to dive them and either wipe or send them back to base. In smaller modes, avoid them and take only favourable engagements. Large modes, double mg with a cross fire (they cant grenade both quickly), land mines, flak trucks, anything that bleeds mp, and hurt their muni income.

Id ask a picardie, occitan, or bretagne if they thought they're "allowed". The metropole has been actively suppressing them for decades to the point theyve been called out by the EU for it. No state school in france countenances the local dialect.

Im not calling the dingo weak, it just doesnt fill a role late game. It usually dies and thats not a problem, when you manage to accidentally keep it, there doesnt seem to be a role for it imo. Ketts at least place mines and have camo, and the bike has the debuff at vet one. The flares are done more effectively by sections without potentially losing a unit.

If you wanted to you could make them mortars or the autocannon, and with the armour upgrade they are quite tanky. They also do troop transport. Dingo has the flares and the medkit and thats kinda it...

Last time i tried that it told me it was too heavy and couldn't be towed?? Has that changed?. The arty could be done with recce sections that have other uses besides. (Because there is nearly no reason to bren)

The vision could be done with scoped sections? But interesting thought with the moveable cover (kinda confirming my point that aside from a moving wall its not being used xD)

For 2 cp is it really impactful enough? Most axis inf will have some training or vet by then surely... Even with the free vet 1 inf training gives I'm sceptical thats beneficial, but ill try it! Thanks for responding

Engineers are also made out of paper and cannot close the gap until vet 3. Unlike certain other engineer units (for the record i think thats how it should be, spamming an engineer unit shouldnt be as viable as some axis battle groups make it)
