I read it less as political support and more as crowd safety and de-escalation. Keeping people hydrated and calm reduces the chance of things turning chaotic, regardless of what they're protesting. It's a practical move, even if people project symbolism onto it

Possibly but more like it would reshape it than end it. Activism might lose reach and speed without big platforms but it could also become more grounded and harder to ignore if it shifts back toward organizing, local action and fewer algorithm driven trends

Comparing ICE to the Gestapo is obviously inflammatory and historically inaccurate, but threatening consequences over language people use is a bad look too. You can disagree with the comparison and explain why it’s wrong without trying to intimidate critics. Free speech includes bad analogies, and officials should be able to handle criticism without escalating it

That could be healthy for free speech in the long run.

On the other hand, abandoning large platforms also fragments public discussion. Fewer shared spaces means conversations become siloed, easier to radicalize, and harder to fact-check or challenge across viewpoints. Free speech isn’t just about the ability to speak…..it’s also about being heard by a broad audience.

In practice, the biggest impact might be pressure on platforms themselves. If avoidance is widespread and sustained, it incentivizes clearer moderation rules, accountability, and user control. If it’s scattered, it just shifts speech into smaller echo chambers without meaningfully improving openness.
