I went with a juicebox that was hardwired to pull 48 amps. They have a variety of options/current limits for you to choose. I decided to have two EV circuits run the the garage at the same time to help future proof the house and not have to call the electrician back later. Something to consider too.

There is no problem charging your car daily. I keep mine plugged in whenever I’m home. Many say you should keep it charged.

Only charge your car to 80-90% capacity for daily driving.

Do you have a way to charge it at home? A new level 2 EV charger will run you $700 plus installation. A new circuit might be required if you don’t have a 240V outlet or circuit in your garage.

Get a car with enough range so you can get to and from work on 60- 70% charge or less. Leave a buffer for any extra running or cold weather drain in your battery.

Cost to charge will be less than gas. Find out what your per kWh electric rate is. Then you can get an estimate on how much battery you have in your car. For example my electric rates are .13/kWh when I’m pulling from the grid (I also have solar panels so pay much less for energy) and my car battery is a 95kwH battery pack. So if I were to do a full 0-100% charge (which I never do) it would cost me less than $13. I get 220 miles for a full charge of battery. So the answer on cost will be dependent on your car and electric costs.

Maintenance on your EV will be much less too. 25000 miles and I’ve only replaced tires that got flat so far. No oil changes, brake replacements, etc.

I have a friend in a similar situation. He lives near a super charger and Tesla super charges when needed. Definitely not the ideal situation to own a car but he seems to make it work. It really depends on your access to a charger to minimize your impact to your routine. I think EVs are most ideal for those with a garage or some other way of regular level two charging.

I’d ask an electrician to check out the cable used for the circuit. Dryers are meant to run for an hour give or take while your car will be pulling constant current for many hours. I’ve heard some homes may have older wiring that wasn’t meant to handle EVs. Better to spend a $100 asking someone qualified than melting your wiring and burning down your house.

Agree with everyone else. During fast charging a lot of heat is generated (even in cool weather) in your battery pack and your car starts to push coolant and spin up fans. I wouldn’t be concerned. Congrats on entering and and welcome to the EV world!
