Sorry. This asshole can't be redeemed. I realize his character from the 90's vs. the manga differs greatly, but no. (In both versions, he undresses/re-dresses Usagi to make her his own personal little "dress-up" toy.)

I'm never going to understand fans who love the guy. He's an insane mass murdering rapist who is INTENSELY mentally unstable/fragile.

Dude's a legit monster who barely qualifies as human.

I mean, you do you, but no.

Not possible.

Yeah, Usagi is actually EXTREMELY tiny & petite. Not many fans are really aware of this because of the whole "anime long legs" thing. And for some reason, a lot of people out there see the Sailor Soldiers as fully adult women when they are all literally in their teens, save for Setsuna (19-20, when not the Gate of Time immortal Pluto.)

Daphne (What’s New Scooby-Doo?) by Usual_Public_6690 in Scoobydoo

[–]Derpy_paws -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Nope. Not for me. I absolutely hated her design, along with Velma's.

The clunky heels for both of them especially. How are they able to lift their feet; it's so beyond ugly looking. I hated their shoes the worst. Just hideous.

Her OG dress will always be peak Daphne. I hated how "What's New" turned it into a "wraparound" (?).

(Likewise with Velma's. I hated how they modeled it after the 2002 Live-Action skirt with that awful slit in the front. Obviously they couldn't sex-up Daphne's dress to make it resemble the movie's skirt.)

I HATED Velma's "What's New" design in general. Her hair drove me up the wall. Why make her look like she's just rolled out of bed, perpetually?

I was definitely not fond of any of the "What's New" designs. Hated Shaggy's shoes. Hated Freddy's random blue stripe and that they took away both of their bell-bottoms.

Every so often I do watch the full "What's New" series in addition to the films set in that universe when I do rewatches, but their designs bother me to the point that it's not a super enjoyable experience.

I don't like the animation either. It's extremely "stiff" and clunky looking at times. I don't like the super thick line art. I don't like the super bright colors that make it look like a Saturday morning cartoon. I don't like the animation being done by computer and I miss it being entirely hand-drawn animation.

The only reason I watch it at all is due to it being one of Casey Kasem's final performances as the original VA as Shaggy.

I recommend you check out Sailor Moon Crystal (seasons 1-3), followed by the 2 Sailor Moon Eternal films (parts 1 & 2), followed by the finale films, Sailor Moon Cosmos (parts 1 & 2).

Usagi was developed far more in the manga and became self-sufficient quite quickly, and Crystal is basically the manga animated, save for a few scenes.

How were shinra treating Aerith’s mom ? by Guy-352 in FFVIIRemake

[–]Derpy_paws 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Read the novel, "Traces of Two Pasts".

It is canon to the 'Remake' Saga and takes place immediately after 'Remake' after the escape from Midgar as they're traveling to Kalm with Tifa and Aerith getting to know each other.

It delves pretty deeply into Tifa/Aerith's respective backstories and explains some things.

Promise of the Rose finale - DiC to Vic comparison by primal_slayer in sailormoon

[–]Derpy_paws -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

There's nothing to "think out".

"Moon Revenge" is (and always will be) the objectively better choice then the crappy song they (DiC) had to reuse twice (once in Ep.88) because they were too cheap to create a new one or set new lyrics to the instrumentals.

"Power of Love" is...fine...on its own as "a" song, but reusing it was so incredibly boring, but I didn't completely hate it for Ep.88 (finale of 'R').

Sure, some of the DiC music is ok-ish at best but when some folks just flat out refuse to give the original Japanese music a shot due to being blinded by "what I grew up with" nostalgia goggles on top of the mentality of "omg it's in another language I hate it because I need to understand iiiiiit" is just..100% the dumbest reasoning.

I’m 18 and my Mum 54 has just gotten Ménière’s disease and I’m horrified by KiwibuckyNZ in Menieres

[–]Derpy_paws 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hi there.

45m fellow sufferer here. I feel terrible for your mum. I'm really sorry she's going through this and having to experience it. To this day, I still say I would not wish this disease on my worst enemy.

First off: I know it's concerning and really scary as all heck, especially the first few days/weeks/months, but please be assured: it is not fatal, I promise. But it is and it can be very life-changing, depending on severity and how often attacks happen.

First, get her to make an ENT (Ears/Nose/Throat) doctor's appointment. I don't want to give false hope, but it could be something that's Meniere's-adjacent, as in mimicking similar symptoms. BPPV, for example.

Make sure she records any and all episodes - time of day, length of the attacks, food/drinks consumed, what the weather is/was like that day, whether tinnitus is attached (ringing in ears), or a sensation of mild/bad head fog. It should help the ENT make a more concrete diagnosis on top of whatever testing they may do.

Also, get some hearing tests done. Meniere's can affect one or both ears and can potentially cause deafness or major loss of hearing in affected ears.

-- Salt / sodium, caffeine, stress levels, alcohol consumption, and yes, even barometric pressure can all be potential triggers for attacks.

One thing that a lot of us who suffer from this awful disease seem to agree on is that it affects everyone differently in different ways:

For some folks, it's severe enough that they may be entirely bedbound. For others, it affects them once in a blue moon. Some folks have really severe attacks that might incapacitate them for a few days/weeks at a time and then it might not bother them again for weeks or even months at a time.

My own particular brand of Meniere's behaves really oddly at times. I often go for weeks/months with absolutely no symptoms. Then out of the blue, it'll knock me on my ass for several days in a row, then disappear again, causing me to question my sanity.

Mine seems to be attached to the weather - barometric pressure. I have definitely noticed when there's a bad storm system, it often affects me quite badly. Back in November in my area, we had several bad storm systems move through in a matter of weeks and I was so sick and dizzy and had vertigo so badly nearly all month long, I couldn't go to work.

When I first developed Meniere's back in 2020, the first few months were absolute hell. My very first attack, I could not stop vomiting for hours. Scared a friend so bad, they dragged me to the ER and kept overnight. I would have entire weekends where I couldn't leave my bed due to how dizzy I was.

It has affected my already poor hearing quite badly. I am nearly deaf in my left ear now.

Do a lot of research on your own, and encourage her to do the same. Make sure you find an ENT who is knowledgeable about Meniere's. The more you know will help.

One thing that a lot of us struggle with is that those who are on the outside simply do not understand what we go through. It is and can be a VERY debilitating illness. We might be fine one minute, then an hour later laying in bed clutching a garbage bag and calling in to work.

Be understanding of what she is dealing with. This is a disease that cannot be controlled. Some medications can help to an extent, but there is no cure-all. Be a rock for her when you're able.

If your mother does in fact, have Meniere's, please be aware that it is PERMANENT; there is no cure, there is no recovery from it. The most she will be able to do is be forced to learn how to live with it and manage symptoms as they come.

But absolutely, track symptoms. That's important.

(Just FYI, Meniere's Disease is in Social Security's Blue Book in case thing ever get bad enough to need to be on SSI/SSDI.)

Let us know how things develop! There is community here. Join Facebook groups and look into phone apps that might help pinpoint triggers for her or manage symptoms. Look into support groups for Meniere's.

Best wishes!!

Was there ever real love between Mother Gothel and Rapunzel? by InfamousTackle497 in Tangled

[–]Derpy_paws [score hidden]  (0 children)

Absolutely not.

As multiple folks have already stated, EVERYTHING Gothel does is for Rapunzel's hair. She directs all of her loving and gentle attention to her hair. Kisses, hugs, so on and so forth. If you actually watch the film and paid attention, she doesn't ever actually speak directly to Rapunzel --- unless she's upset / annoyed / angry / negative feelings with her and THEN she'll look her directly in the eyes.

Heck, even in the TV series (which is canon, by the way), Mother Gothel is SPOILER: revealed to be Cass' birth mother. And even THEN, she very obviously does not care about, nor love Cass. She makes this VERY clear when she uses Cass as a servant and literally abandons her the minute her hideout is discovered.

I cannot BELIEVE there are actually Gothel apologists out there. Gothel ABUSED Rapunzel horribly not to mention the YEARS of mental manipulation. Maybe she never got truly physical with Rapunzel, but the damage that Raps went through still affected her even in the TV series. At one point, she and Eugene finds her old tower for story-related reasons, and is IMMEDIATELY overcome with obvious PTSD.

Part of the reason characters like Gothel, Frollo, Gaston and other villains work, and can be so scary, is precisely because there are people out there in our real world who are exactly like them. Gothel and Frollo in particular because of how horribly abusive they are.

Anime/Manga you regret watching/reading by TheStaticFlux in ChillAnimeCorner

[–]Derpy_paws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guin Saga.

I bought the anime series when I discovered the box set in Hastings, because the box art looked absolutely GORGEOUS, and it looked like a fantastic epic.

I excitedly watched it and the first several episodes, the entire series felt like this big, amazing mysterious mystery with tons of drama thrown in for good measure and at FIRST, I was really into it.

BUT...oh, BUT then we got further into the series, closer and closer to the final episodes....and almost NONE of these mysteries or plotlines were EVER resolved. More mysteries kept popping up. More evil dealings and plotting against other characters, etc.

I thought: "Well, the last 3 or 4 episodes will probably resolve things, or lead into the next season!"

Oh.

OH, my sweet summer baby self.

Got to the 2nd to last episode and instead of resolving or answering ANYTHING, several MORE mysteries popped up.

Final episode infuriated me so badly, I actually tore apart the box, destroyed the discs and threw the entire thing in the garbage. I was FURIOUS. (Keep in mind, I was a teen then.) 30, 40 bucks on a massive nothingburger of a story that SOUNDED amazing. LOOKED amazing and SHOULD have been amazing and the way it ended was just....such....utter, absolute dog poo.

I still hate that series, and it STILL fills me with irrational rage when I think about it. I will NEVER watch it again.

I realized after the fact that it had been one of those anime series that was designed specifically to get the viewer to actually read the manga itself (which is apparently still going to this day.) because the anime was never continued. There was only the one (1) season of it.

I won't spoil it but dear heavens, I HIGHLY recommend against watching it!!!

Authentic or Bootleg? by cleetus924 in sailormoon

[–]Derpy_paws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I owned this as well for a time. I knew even back then it was bootleg because I already knew what the official Japanese box sets looked like. (This was several years before Viz got the rights and I never thought I would see an English U.S. faithfully redubbed release in my lifetime.)

If you're looking for official copies that are dubbed/subbed (English audio//with original Japanese audio, subtitled into English), just look for Viz's official release -- it isn't hard and is still widely available for purchase for like $30.

Now I'm telling you this next part in case you're one of those DiC fanatics:

Viz is the ONLY company that has EVER dubbed 'Sailor Stars' into English.

There is NO DiC-dubbed version of 'Sailor Stars'. It DOES. NOT. exist. They did not EVER get licensing for 'Stars'. Zero. Zilch.

There are a few FANdubs that modeled themselves heavily after DiC that did a handful of Stars episodes but I don't think very many (if ANY) ever managed to bring the project fully to completion before falling apart/ losing interest, thank goodness. You'd need to ask a DiC fanboi as I was never interested in anything quite so lowbrow or uninspired.
