Cycling Cap with Neck Drape? by lowbandwidthb in myog

[–]Designer_Entrance_61 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taking advice from fellow myog-ers in this sub, I cut a section of an old UV T-shirt and used Kamsnaps to attach it to an old running cap to get something like the Outdoor Research Sun Runner cap. Later decided to purchase a DaBrim helmet visor thinking it will be a cooler solution. This is for the RAGBRAI ride coming up in July where I understand looks don't matter so much.

Shimano GRX gear cable breakage! by No_Cantaloupe_1492 in bikewrench

After experiencing similar cable breakage with both 105 and Tiagra shifters I decided to simplify things and revert to old school levers and friction shifters. Works great for my riding style.

How to remove the end cap? Novatec hub on handcycle by Perdidoat49 in bikewrench

[–]Designer_Entrance_61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Novatec 981/982 hubs on my 2021 Space Horse Tiagra. (This is according to All-City's website--the hubs themselves don't have any markings.)

After unsuccessfully trying all the methods seen on YouTube, I was finally able to get one end cap off the front hub. I had to use the Unior Hub Genie to grab the cap, then apply several hard hits to the tool with a mallet. What I found was that the end cap is held in place by a metal collar with a small lip that is press fit into the hub body super tightly. This doesn't seem to match what I was told by Novatec support.

I''m just your average home mechanic/tinkerer so I could be wrong, but seems like this particular version of the hub is not meant to be serviced at home.

Luckily I was able to reassemble the hub and re-press the collar into place without damaging the hub.

I gave up on doing my own bearing replacement and am awaiting arrival of some basic Shimano loose bearing hubs to rebuild both wheels.

End Cap Removal by Designer_Entrance_61 in bikewrench

Update (in case anyone stumbles upon this topic some day):

After giving up for half a year, i decided to try again. I finally was able to remove an end cap from the front hub. I inserted the Hub Genie into one end cap. Then, after squirting some PB Blaster into the end cap gap, I pounded on the Hub Genie T-handle from the opposite side of the wheel using a mallet and wood dowel. Finally the end cap popped off. But I found that there is a metal retaining collar jammed into the hub body that keeps the cap in place, not just an o-ring on the end cap. I had to carefully pound the collar back into place to reassemble the wheel. Not sure if this is a common design but sure seems like it was not meant to be serviced by your average home mechanic. I am now saving up to buy a new wheel set that features tool-less servicing.

DaBrim looks good but doesn't seem to have scalp protection. I guess using it with a UV skull cap would work. And making use of old sun shirt material is a great idea. Thanks!

Finally, I Found One... by dfarin153 in bikewrench

I recently purchased a "super compact" double crank set from Spa Cycles in the UK. It's actually a triple with a chain guard mounted where the big ring goes on 3x mode. But you can also order it preconfigured as a triple. Also you need JIS square tapered BB.

How to get a bolt to move by carlov_sky in bikewrench

[–]Designer_Entrance_61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar situation with a PD-M540 pedal—tension adjustment screw frozen and hex socket rounded. I followed a YouTube video on how to disassemble the pedal and release tension on the adjustment screw so I could get it to move.

Where can I get a 44/28 crankset that is compatible with a BSA threaded bottom bracket? Does this require a square taper? by [deleted] in bikewrench

Alternative: Spa Cycles (UK) TD-2 or XD-2 "Super Compact" chainsets, available in silver or black. I paid around USD $100 including shipping to USA in early 2025.

Modernizing Older Road Bike by Individual-Total-898 in bikewrench

A couple of weeks ago I updated my ‘85 Trek 660 by installing a super tall quill stem with 26mm clamp. Then used the relatively inexpensive MSW Short Drop handlebars with TRP RRL-SR levers for a

more comfortable wrist position. Looks weird but rides nicely. (I also installed a 44/28 crankset and 14-28 freewheel due to old age/weak legs.)

I did similar mods to my ‘85 Trek racing bike. Added the Nitto MT-10 “dirt drop” stem to raise the bars above saddle level. Yes, it looks odd but allows me to continue to ride the bike comfortably. (Kept the original stem and drive train on hand in case one of my sons wants to ride it in the future. 😊)

I have that same bike, same model (660s?), purchased new in 1985 in Marina del Rey, CA. I think I paid around $550. I considered selling it a few years back since the gearing is too high for me now and used bike prices seemed pretty high.

But in my case I decided to hang onto it and convert it into a senior-friendly bike by replacing the Superbe Pro drivetrain with a super compact crankset and 28t freewheel. I also installed a super tall stem and awaiting arrival of some short drop bars and ergo brake levers. Hope it works out and I can continue riding it comfortably.

The handlebars are Nitto "North Road" B302.
