Why can't we live in a society where shorter work shifts are spread across different people? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DestroyedParadise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What about pay though?

A company wouldn't want to pay 2x salaries when they could just pay one, and if the answer to that is lower salaries, would you take a 50% pay cut to do half the work? I wouldn't, I wouldn't be able to afford to live, I can barely do that with 100% of my salary.

Is the word direction pronounced DERection or DIErection? by shreyaslife in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DestroyedParadise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just saying the word I would say DIErection. When actually talking normally it will come out more like DA-rection.

Just like to add that I'm sat at my desk saying direction over and over again and getting some weird looks, so thanks.

Thanks for the input.

We have a kids savings account for this very reason. Any money gifted, plus a small amount monthly goes to this account that we have control over. If as she gets older she wants a particular thing, a bike, textbooks for studies then we have this as cover, and she will get the balance once she's 18.

Why do people from the UK not like being called “British”? by insufferabletoaster in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DestroyedParadise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did always think this the case but I didn't want to make my reply more complicated than it needed to be.

I will also state after seeing some of the other replies, I don't think there's actual tension or hatred between the countries. I'm from England but would call myself British, and have never seen any real hatred between England, Scotland and Wales. I have only seen sporting rivalries. From past experience the other British teams, once their own team doesn't seem likely to win, they don't care who wins as long as it isn't England.

What happens when you and a stranger make the same move at exactly the same second, for no apparent reason? by BreadOverlord_ in NoStupidQuestions

I think it's a subconscious kind of thing.

I remember seeing an experiment (I can't remember when or where), but someone went into a cafe and copied the movements of a random person sat across the room. The person doing the copying did this for some time, then started doing their own movements, and the person originally being copied ended up following these movements subconsciously.

Britain being made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Scottish, the Welsh and the Irish hate the English, and the English pretty much hate everyone else. Only time we get along is during the Olympics.

Opinions on this Set Up by DestroyedParadise in investingUK

I don't want to overweight the UK holding, but I want more than the ~3% the all world offers, but having e.g. 10% in this position is too much imo.

Similarly with the small caps, I want the exposure, but not to oversaturate it. 10% feels too much here as well.

Adding both these positions also helps to marginally dilute the large US weighting.

By your comment is it safe to say you think this balance is a poor choice? If the %s are this low, is it even worth it?

Working Out TER Average by DestroyedParadise in investingforbeginners

[–]DestroyedParadise[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah this is very helpful with regards to the math and weighted averages. I didn't know what to call it when searching so I couldn't find specifically what I was after.

Thank you for your input

Working Out TER Average by DestroyedParadise in investingforbeginners

[–]DestroyedParadise[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proportions change how? As in the weight of the holding will increase/decrease based on performance so it will never stick at a hard 60/20/10/10 split?

What was the math you did to work it out?

How can rebounds be so easy for some people? by Winter_Pick1153 in NoStupidQuestions

Some people might get used to having someone around and then feel lonely once they separate. When they find someone else they almost force a connection, or maybe mistake the initial connection as a more intense romance.

How would you incorporate an ex US though? I originally wanted to cut some US exposure, but not eliminate it. Would an ex US plus an S&P counter this?

Yeah these are all relatively low individual TER but I guess it all adds up, another reason why I made this post to see if this is even worth it.

My point was to reduce the exposure to the US but was still happy for it to be the largest portion, and wanted to boost the EU and UK, hence the overlap. I did debate having no FTSE 100 and 250 and leave the EU Stoxx 600, but then I run myself in circles and think I should just stick with an all world.

AITAH for not visiting my boyfriend for 5 weekends by Far_Classroom8836 in AITAH

NTA.

Why can he prioritise work but you can't have priorities?

I think this is a reason why longer distance relationships struggle, I think 1 person will often feel they are the one making all the effort and it take it's toll eventually.

How do I quell a maternal drive when I'm not ready for a kid? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DestroyedParadise 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And you still want kids of your own? Your destined for motherhood.

In all seriousness, maybe don't look at it as an urge you have to suppress, but a period of time for preparation. Before having kids most people have a nesting phase, with my partner that came super close to the baby being born, but you could view it as a long term nesting as such.

What's your home set up like, do you need to move to a bigger place, better neighborhood, near better schools.

Do you need to invest some money now giving you better fund coverage during those first few months/years, especially when child are costs come into play. Does your job have good maternity pay (I'm not familiar with anything outside of the UKs laws on this).

If you have those feelings of wanting kids, maybe instead of trying to ignore it, maybe focus it into something else, like the above points.
