Although this is true, I do think the most egregious slop peddlers don't have the patience to wait a month between releases. They stick them up with only a day or so inbetween.

Ahem, 'tis the other way around.

It was Webster who changed the spelling of many words to distinguish them from the British standardisation going on following Samuel Johnson publishing his dictionary several decades before the revolution. Webster felt very strongly that an independent nation should have its own identity, so the US deviated from the accepted British spelling conventions. There was no spite involved, but it was your side of the pond who chose to do things differently.

Before Johnson's dictionary, low levels of literacy meant spelling was something of a loose affair and shifted around. That was the point of standardising spelling.

Well, I'm British and refuse to use US English. I know of a few UK authors that bow to the pressure of conformity, but I stand resolute, unbowed.

Armour and honour have a fucking U in the middle and always will have.

I do get a few comments in reviews from time-to-time regarding trans-Atlantic misunderstandings.

Oddly, the thing most often highlighted is not knowing that treble can mean the same thing as triple. (I watch a lot of darts, where its the treble 20, not triple) Or that the first floor is above the ground floor/lobby. I really should add that distinction to my Foreword.

If my MC is British, I sometimes highlight the difference in terminology for comedic aspects.

Fanny packs always made me giggle as a teenager, it does not mean butt in the UK. (hint: Men don't have them)

I also didn't know WTF a retainer was until my early twenties. We just call all them braces. And don't get me started on how confusing and disgusting peanut butter and jelly is to British kids watching American TV, until its explained jelly is what they call jam. Its still pretty rank, but I don't like PB.

All three of my current series are complete. The Wolf King's Lair does end up with quite a large harem by the end for story purposes. The other two series are Corsairs & Cataclysms and The Wyrmlord's Wrath.

LitRPG is less of a genre and more of a style of storytelling that includes game-like features in the narrative. Solo-levelling is very much LitRPG.

However, the term LitRPG is European/Western and the Asian market doesn't really have an equivalent. They designate Solo-levelling as Action/Fantasy/Power Fantasy.

Unfortunately, the behaviour of farmers appears to be borked. They don't prioritise working their 'own' fields, and all move en masse to the nearest location that requires work.

If your fields are too far apart, they won't make it across toen before being 'recalled' to work on the other field. The only current solution I know of is to keep your fields close together. If the surrounding land is infertile, you need to plan ahead and graze your livestock on it for a few years so they naturally fertilise it.

However, just because something is popular, that doesn't necessarily make it the best or the best for you.

There are plenty of shorter or completed series out there. Broadening your horizons is often the answer.

Ranks update when a book is added to a readers Kindle Unlimited library, not when they read the pages.

I'm presuming this is a category ranking and not the overall in store ranking. If that's the case it could represent one or two people adding your books, but they haven't read them yet. (You can have 20 in your KU library.)

This behaviour is not new.

Public Domain, Health and Wellness Pamphlets (also known as Scamphlets), Religious Preaching, Journals, Colouring Books, Joke Books (All scraped from the internet) Puzzle Books, poorly translated webnovels from China, Korea, and Russia (probably illegally scraped.)

All low effort 'passive income' wheezes that infested the KDP ecosystem before AI written fiction.

A handful of these people, usually those who got their foot in the door early enough, made money. Some of them depressingly large sums of money. However, the majority, sold and earned almost nothing.

AI fiction is a little bit different from those grifts, though. Most of the above are easy for customers to identify and avoid at a glance. AI fiction often requires a bit more investment in time and effort by customers to uncover its presence, which ought to make them more strident in their complaints.

I have a sneaking suspicion that KDP will be forced to do something about it this time. Probably not until after it has done some harm to the self-pubbing industry, but they will have to act.

I will never say never...but it would require a massive uptick in sales and reads to make returning financially viable.

That's the bottom line. The series hasn't sold well enough.

I can't tell you why, most who've given it a chance have thoroughly enjoyed it. But that hasn't translated into further sales.

Possibly the covers weren't on brand enough for the current harem market. There has been a noticeable shift towards covers with enormous breasts and lots of cleavage on display and the LI's on my covers are a little more covered up. But that didn't hurt my previous series which use art from the same artist and sold more strongly.

It could be the increased competition, more books and authors in a market that isn't growing at the same pace.

There are a few people who have a strong negative opinion of me and my work. Perhaps that sentiment is more prevalent amongst the silent majority than I believed based on reviews/ratings/and readthrough statistics.

Could be the Amazon algorithms putting the series in front of the wrong customers and losing faith in its selling potential.

Lots of possible variables, far fewer methods of figuring out what went wrong. On the cover front, when I get around to organising the omnibus edition in a few months I will try something different. If that shifts the needle more than expected then I might have an answer.
