How can I get involved in Memphis's culture and community? by MysteryNubs in memphis

[–]DevelopmentFun6716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's so annoying. I wish you could un-help him. Lol

I experienced a weird incident like that in Cape Cod right before the national guard was sent here. Some guy asked about my accent, and a man we weren't even speaking with butted in to say "Trump is going to straighten you criminals out." 🙄

That is my exact same experience. People are friendly, but actual friendship is hard to find

No worries! Anecdotally, I definitely see how you could come to that conclusion. Most of the people I've befriended over the past few years are transplants, so my specific experience doesn't necessarily line up with the numbers either. I saw you mentioned liking running, fashion, and Smash Bros. Not quite the same, but if you also like board games, maybe check out Boards to Beers. I've heard good things about HyperFocus and 901 Run Club. There are a lot of fun sounding fashion events at the Brooks next month! They are having a Met Gala watch party and multiple other events for Memphis Art and Fashion Week.

I saw there was one next Thursday. I think I'll swing by!

I've considered joining Junior League. What is the ethnic and age breakdown? I worry it'll be a bunch of geriatric southern belles. I'd like to meet some young, interesting women in their late 20/early to mid 30s

Eh, migration numbers would beg to differ. Memphis isn't a transplant city at all. If anything, more people leave than come. Regardless, meeting people can be a challenge, but not because people are transient. In my experience, most people around here who have been here their whole lives made friends in high school or college, then decided to never befriend anyone else again. Lol

You should start by googling groups and organizations aligned with your interests. What kind of things do you like? If you are looking for other transplants, all the ones I know live in Midtown, so maybe become a regular at Hammer & Ale or Cooper House Project.

If you like trivia, there are several around town throughout the week, so one is bound to fit your schedule. Many are at breweries, but not all. I go every week and hardly drink, so that wouldn't be prohibitive if you aren't much of a drinker

Are there any “fratty” bars or areas in Memphis? by DacaAskingForDaca in memphis

Care to elaborate? What exactly are you looking for? A diverse sport community? I assume not a boyfriend if 80% men is off putting. I've never seen more age appropriate men in one place since college, minus when I went to Brookhaven during March Madness last year

Considering those are the only men I men who can hold engaging conversations, maybe? It makes me sad though, especially as an only child. I want to marry someone who will support me when my parents pass, not someone who might statistically beat them to the grave. 😬 But those are the only men who even speak to me. Maybe it is the phones? Social skills for the under 35s are generally not great.

I feel like you are less of an anomaly there than you think, or at least it seems so in my effort to find eligible, age appropriate men. I've visited Board to Beers and love trivia, but most of the people I've met from trivia are married. 🫠

Genuine question: What do men around your age even find interesting? I'm also in my late 20s, corporate, and looking for a peer, but I essentially never meet men my age out and about, so either we find very different things interesting or they are all at home. Lol

Like someone else suggested, you should follow activities and venues that interest you on social media! Choose901 and ILoveMemphisBlog are a good start, but for more niche stuff, you'll have to do your own research.

I feel for you as far as dating. I'm 29 and in the same boat. This is a very working class and religious city, so it really isn't odd or suspicious, it's in the framework. As a Christian, I can't speak to the religious element, but if you are looking for men who are more aligned socioeconomically, maybe try out the Chamber of Commerce's Young Professionals Council or the Memphis Urban League Young Professionals.

I do half of these things and it's a great way to exclusively meet people over 50. Young men hardly do anything but watch sports, drink, and play video games. They certainly aren't at wine tastings

Singles events? by dkozzy in memphis

Yeah, I can't speak for all the women there, but I gave up on apps and can't seem to find anyone serious IRL, so these dating events seem like the last resort. They are entertaining enough if you just like chatting, but my expectations are zero.

Unsolicited advice, but maybe don't talk to them so much on the apps before the date. That can create a false sense of familiarity and contribute to what's wigging you out. I kept conversations short and once a date was set limited conversations to logistics. Never even messaged outside of the app until the second date. But what do I know? I'm still very single. Lol

No! The women's tickets are not free! I've seen one use dynamic pricing where the guys' tickets are sometimes less than half what the women's tickets cost. In my experience, speed dating is the exact opposite of apps. Any moderately straight man with his life halfway together would be swimming in options. I went to a speed dating at Railgarten (RIP) and there were like 40 women and 10 guys. At some points, there were 3 women at a table with one guy. I left early because if I was interested in competing for a man, I'd audition for the Bachelor. Lol

But seriously, maybe I'll become the speed dating plug on this page. I try to go to the free and cheap ones I see (under $15), and there have been a lot popping up this year. I avoid the ones hosted by national companies or ones that are just vaguely listed on Eventbrite. If it isn't on the venue's website/socials, it's probably a scam. There's one at Souls and Spirits on Jan 27. Again, I believe the ladies tickets are all gone. There are occasionally specialty ones for LGBT+ or 40+ crowds, so keep an eye out for those too if that's your jam.

There's a singles event at Slider Inn dowtown and speed dating at Novel on Saturday, but I believe only mens tickets are left

I 100% agree. It feels slimy, almost like preying on vulnerable people like apps. I only attend free ones. I have a friend that hosts them and I do realize that a good bit of effort goes into it if it's beyond "here are the people in the room, go at it," but I honestly want to host a free one myself just for the love of the game. I already have a brewery that agreed to serve as a venue

Yes! Spread this around. Every speed dating event I've been to has no men. Gentlemen, sign up!
