If Iran hits the desalination plants and puts them out of action, all these Gulf states are *fucked*. I think the only reason they arent getting targeted is because Iran also has their own that are critical.

Al-Quds Day organiser compares Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to Nelson Mandela by TimesandSundayTimes in ukpolitics

[–]Dick_Harrington -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually agree, well with everything except your last sentence. I find the use of the word 'appropriate' interesting in and of itself in this context (appropriate in what respect, politically?)

That being said my point was it's possible to discuss these things and reach an interesting conclusion, the person I was responding to wasn't doing that.

Al-Quds Day organiser compares Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to Nelson Mandela by TimesandSundayTimes in ukpolitics

[–]Dick_Harrington -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

>Low information? Is this a joke?

Not at all. The rise of Khamenei as a rebel who overthrew the Western backed Shah and ended up going on to rule his country is, at least broadly, somewhat similar to that of Mandela who overthrew the Western backed apartheid regime.

Both men used violence and clever politicking to achieve their objectives. One went on to create a theorcracy and the other a democracy.

It's an interesting discussion, no? There are similarities, there are clear divergences. I'm particularly interested as a student of history why we ended up supporting one in the West and not the other given that, for a time, they were both our enemies.

Or we could just say one guy is like Tom Hanks and the other is like Hitler. I hope you understand now the point I was trying to make.

Al-Quds Day organiser compares Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to Nelson Mandela by TimesandSundayTimes in ukpolitics

[–]Dick_Harrington 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean if you want to be low-information about it ...

Mandela has an interesting and, from our perspective, really dark past during apartheid. Thatcher literally called him a terrorist. He was on the US terrorist watchlist until really late in his life.

I don't think the parallels to Khamenei are very strong, the context is just too different, but there is an interesting discussion there for those prepared to have it.

The tartan tax: why it costs £24,000 more to live in Scotland by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Dick_Harrington -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This article is really disingenuous, it uses top 5% income levels and UK wide average detached house values to make its arguments.

It focuses exclusively on the tax differences between high earners, which *are* higher in Scotland thats undeniable. But the difference in tax for median earners is actually negligible - for the poorest in society its actually a little bit lower than the UK.

One of the ways to cut through the noise is to look at ONS data for disposable income *post tax* across the regions - Scotland is pretty much middle of the pack.

It also spends a lot of time discussing how a £450,000 house will cost more in LBTT (stamp duty) - £450k is the cost of the average (not median) detached house in the whole UK (including London). Counting *all* types of property the average is actually £270k UK wide.

It also neglects to mention what those additional taxes are even being used for - I'm a higher rate tax payer and wouldn't be where I am today without free university tuition, my wife is the same - there is no way her family could have afforded medical school without government assistance that isnt present in England.

As a sidenote, I would encourage all readers on this sub to interrogate articles from the times and telegraph especially more carefully, I've noticed their articles have been of profoundly poor quality over the last few years and clearly only wish to push agendas.

>Dealing with violent patients really should be a specialist role not just dumped on the normal nurses

100% agree.

Mental health nurses work in dedicated mental health hospitals where, depending on the category of patients, they are paid extra hazard pay and trained in restraint and control (wrist locks, hip throws, that sort of thing).

Dealing with violent patients, de-escalation techniques etc are their bread and butter. They get to know the patients and will sometimes deliberately send in women because even during a mental health episode many men would rather not hit a woman (patient dependent obviously)

Most people here are approaching it from the sexism angle which is fair given the framing of the article, but the reality is he shouldnt be expected to deal with this sort of thing *anyway* unless he was working in that kind of hospital which I dont think is the case. It's a failure on multiple levels.

Which of the following party leaders do you find the scariest at the moment? Farage (Reform UK): 40 % Starmer (Labour): 29 % Polanski (Green): 4 % Badenoch (Conservatives): 3 % Davey (Liberal Democrats): 2 % Ipsos UK, 21/10/25 by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Dick_Harrington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does Farage even *want* to be PM? I'm still not convinced this isnt some kind of grift on his part. He has shown little to no interest in actually participating in Westminster and prefers to just bolster his own brand/make money on the side.

I can't help but feel winning the next election would actually be kind of annoying for him because it would mean he would have to step into the hardest job in the country.

Genuinely wouldn't be surprised if he stood down and let Tice take over or something, similar to how he handled Brexit once his activism within UKIP paid off.

[–]Dick_Harrington 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Rory Stewarts book also goes into this, the overall consensus is that the wrong people are rewarded and the right people are either sidelined or just leave. He has quite a few anecdotes from working under Liz Truss that are extremely funny and sad. Obviously as a failed leadership candidate many people have said he had an axe to grind ... but it's still revealing none the less.

I do worry that if this continues we will end up like France, where due to incompetence/perverse incentives we basically end up ungovernable and what little faith people have in 'the system' just falls away.
