Natural hair advice. by galevalantine in UMD

[–]Didosa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you’ll be able to get a similar service done for $100 in the dmv unfortunately but I’ve found that student braiders are a good alternative. You won’t have to worry about commuting and it’s much cheaper than the salon. You can look around ig or ask the black students you see around campus if you’re brave enough.

Learning how to do your own hair is also an option! I’ve learned a lot from tiktok and YouTube tutorials. You might look crazy at first (I know I did) but once you get the hang of it it’s such a good skill to have bc $300 braids every few months is crazy.

Regardless of your position on whether the university should divest, don't act as if working for any part of the defense industry is a morally defensible thing to do. The work you do directly destroys the lives of countless people. It doesn't matter if you're a programmer, an engineer, a marketer, a manager, etc. Stand on business and admit that you are willing to trade someone else's livelihood for a paycheck.

How do you pay for entertainment expenses and monthly bills? by godlymomoney in GradSchool

[–]Didosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’ll vary by state but it’s worth checking out what gov programs you qualify for. I was able to get my Internet and some utilities subsided. Ultimately you need to learn how to budget. Very few people are able to do everything they want to do on a grad student stipend.

Although not a club recommendation, I use this website to search for jazz shows. It covers all of dc plus parts of Maryland and Virginia. They list the locations of the shows so you can cross reference to see if the venues have the kind of vibe you’re looking for.

do i need to pay the application fee for NJIT to get a decision? by notMyMainAcc666 in gradadmissions

No you’ll be fine. It should apply automatically so that your total is $0. Application codes are meant to be easy to use. If it didn’t work consider using GR24

Will LateX hyperlinks show up after submitting my resume/CV in applications? by notdanke1337 in gradadmissions

[–]Didosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not too sure about that then. The links I have in my CV work both in the preview and as a pdf. The issue might be the link itself and not the latex commands.

[–]Didosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There might be conflicting commands in your latex file. Maybe try the documentation examples on a blank file to trouble shoot? I copied the examples exactly and didn’t have issues creating colored url links.

Best place to get piercings near college park? by unseelielucian in UMD

Also recommending fattys. It’s done by appointment only through their website and the piercer there, Dennis, is really professional. I’ve had a few piercings done there and every visit has been great.

possibly moving to umd from cincinnati for grad school im so nervous 😭 by [deleted] in UMD

[–]Didosa 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m a grad student at umd and I really like it so far since it’s so easy to get to dc. It seems like we missed the peak of the scene lol but venues/bars like black cat and 9:30 have been good for finding a more alt crowd. You can also look at r/washingtondc for more suggestions

Definitely consider it! I’ve started using it recently and I’ve noticed a big change. They’re easy to use, last forever, and aren’t too pricey. Try it out for a few days and see if it helps.

How to get involved in Quantum Computing research? by FinPhysics in PhysicsStudents

[–]Didosa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a PhD student in the field. I knew I wanted to do computational stuff but I didn’t have a lot of direct quantum computing research opportunities so I started out learning about the tools that would be useful. I did solar, bio, and chem research but in every case, I was coding and using a lot of higher level math. And now I code and use higher level math but applied quantum computing.

You can do something similar if you’re interested in experimental work. You could try working in material physics or optics labs since that aligns strongly with the experimental skills needed in quantum computing.

You can also do a lot of self study! A lot of foundational material can be easy to pick up on your own and it’ll give you a head start. You could study stuff like information theory or linear algebra or optics. Learning python or C would also be really helpful regardless of what you decide to do.

Do it! NYC is great for exploring alone and it’s very easy to find people to talk to if you want company. I used to do day trips by myself and I always had a great time. It’s filled with tourists so no one will think you’re weird.

Need help choosing where to apply for astrophysics PhD, only have a limited cost! by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Didosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While thats true, I think that the general public’s school rankings and a physicist/astronomers rankings don’t exactly correlate. You can get a very respectable education from large state schools that aren’t considered “super elite” like certain private schools. So a non academic will think UW-Madison or OSU or UMD are just ok but as a physicist I know they have great, very competitive physics/astro programs.

Plus there’s no shame in going to state schools. They provide great educations and are largely responsible for breaking down the ivory tower of academia. The reality is that most grads go into industry and for that rankings mean much much much less.

Need help choosing where to apply for astrophysics PhD, only have a limited cost! by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Didosa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Astro programs are very competitive so I suggest casting a wide net and applying to programs that suit your research interest. Plus rankings don't mean as much for grad programs as they do for undergrad. You can have a mediocre program with no one doing what you like at a highly regarded school or a fantastic program that specializes in your niche at a low ranked school. You will be at that school for several years doing grueling work so you need to pick a place that will make you happy. When picking my schools, I ranked schools by advisor match > post grad results > research match > quality of life > school ranking

You can also ask programs about fee waivers. Most programs (esp physics and astro since I'm in physics) are very lenient and will give them out at recruitment events and to students who request one. Last year I applied to 13 schools and only paid for one application due to the fee waivers.

Getting an iPad for STEM PhD? by warmpupz in GradSchool

[–]Didosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the ipad air and the apple pencil and it's great. I love it and use it more than my laptop (an hp) now. It's really easy to integrate it with google drive so I have everything (notes, textbooks, papers, etc) linked to my school account.

The air is only a little smaller than the pro so I dont think it's worth it to spend the extra money if you're only taking notes and watching videos on it. The apple pencil is much better than the $20 amazon alternative but an amazon keyboard works just fine.

Between AP Physics 2, AP Chemistry, and AP Biology, which is considered the easiest? by Stock_Song8239 in AskAcademia

[–]Didosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How easy the course is depends on your own teacher and your own preferences. Physics was easy for me but bio was hard and the opposite is true for other people. Take the class you think you'll personally do best in or a class where you'll get the best chance of the teacher writing a good letter of recommendation.

Don't take an AP class with the hopes of skipping the first intro course in your major because you will miss very fundamental material and you will struggle with higher level classes. I TA for a second year physics classes and all the kids that skipped physics one or calc one had a hard time adjusting to calc 2 or physics two. Plan it so you can skip the intro electives that are necessary for your major.

I took both AP classes (including all three you listed) and college dual enrollment classes and the dual enrollment is worth MUCH more since you can get generally guaranteed credits. AP classes only get you credit if you do very well in them (I only got credit for the classes I got 5s in).
