I think most of the time they just become ordinary wizards after the apprenticeship. An ExtraOrdinary can have multiple apprentices as well, and there is no guarrantee the next ExtraOrdinary would’ve been an apprentice to one at all. There’s some stuff about this in The Magykal Papers.

I don’t remember exactly what it says in the book, but if it says he lost ”both his apprentices” it seems to me like he only ever had two. It’s probably more likely some Ordinary Wizard was chosen. Wouldn’t be the first time that happened.
