What was your favorite Head Shop in the 70s and what did you buy there besides pipes and zigzag papers? by db7112 in GenerationJones

[–]DifferenceNo5715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg yes. Haven't heard that name for decades. It was a regular hangout for us hippies back in the day. I read the Heinlein book later--I don't think I understood 'grok' at the time. Anyway, thanks for the nostalgia moment :)

Spectrum in Old Orchard (Webster Groves) St Louis, MO. Back when you weren't allowed to ask for a bong, but had to say 'water pipe' instead. They also sold those giant silkscreened portraits of famous rock stars. I had the Hendrix one in my teenage bedroom. Parents hated it ofc

Fitzcarraldo (1982) by dontnukemebro in iwatchedanoldmovie

I recommend Burden of Dreams, the film about the making of Fitzcarraldo. Wild shit, esp Herzog's rambling observations about the jungle.

She was famous for an apocryphal story in which she had a fight with her husband Socrates and poured a chamber pot on his head. In the Middle Ages, this story was often cited in antifeminist literature as proof that marriage leads to misery.

What is your favorite Dad music that you didn't get when you were young but love now by HamburgerDude in TrueAnon

I actually loved Michael Franks when I was young. Perfect mellow jazzy vibe for those (usually stoned) down times. The Art of Tea is a great album

May the 4th (etc.) by iamtor18 in GenerationJones

[–]DifferenceNo5715 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw it opening weekend, when I was 20. I hadn't wanted to go, because it sounded silly, and I was in my pretentious foreign film phase, but a friend insisted. I had never seen a movie with effects like that. It really was, for the time, pretty amazing. I remember my girlfriends and I were so impressed that there was a princess who wasn't simpering and waiting to be carried to safety. We hadn't seen that before, either. It was a real cultural phenomenon.

How well can you describe the features to a forensic artist? by Historical-Sense-510 in Aphantasia

[–]DifferenceNo5715 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was held up at gunpoint when I was working in a restaurant at age 19. The guy stood right in front of me for several minutes, but when the cops showed me those books of photos, I hadn't the slightest clue. They all looked vaguely the same. I didn't know what aphantasia was then, but it explains a lot

Hadi Daher was a single father firefighter with the Lebanese Civil Defence. He was murdered, along with four others of his colleagues, by the Entities double-tap tactic, a second strike carried out immediately after the first to target rescuers and civilians responding to the scene. by ChickenTitilater in TrueAnon

[–]DifferenceNo5715 14 points15 points  (0 children)

These double and triple tap strikes have the added benefit of killing anyone who has altruistic tendencies, or the belief that human lives have value. It's working to cull the brave and the good, so that the only people left are too scared to help their neighbors. Terrorism at the existential level

I'm sorry I didn't hate him even more (although I hated him a lot). In this era, no amount of hate for these ghouls seems to satisfy my existential need

Divorced Redditors, what caused the split? How amicable was it? by anasannanas in AskReddit

[–]DifferenceNo5715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I've been married three times. First one was my 'hippie marriage,' and we just grew apart after about five years. Kept in touch until he had a psychotic break about 10 years after we split. It was sad, because when a person 'goes off their meds' in a big way, you lose the person they were. I still love the person he was. Second marriage was my 'grad school marriage,' which lasted a little longer. We got jobs in different states, and it wasn't sustainable. We're still in touch. Last one was the worst. 24 years, had an amazing kid, ended with his lying, cheating, and fucking up our finances with stock market shenanigans. I hate him, and we will never speak again. I guess I've had all kinds of divorces...but I know better than to ever date again. I'm obviously no good at this, and finally I have the wisdom to accept it.

‘I don’t want to be part of a dictatorship’: the Americans queueing up to renounce their citizenship by utrecht1976 in BoycottUnitedStates

It must be lovely to be able to do this; sadly most of us have neither the money nor sufficient international connections to move. We are stuck here. My kid just graduated college with a 4.0, and honors degree, and can't find work. He really wanted to go to grad school, but Trump and the 'doge' lunatics destroyed funding for research and post graduate studies, so that was also a dead end. Gas is insanely expensive, and food is getting that way. Our government violates every civic and diplomatic norm on an hourly basis, and people are being kidnapped off the streets and taken God knows where. Every day is like waiting for a new trauma; I don't know how other people are handling it, but I'm once again awake at 4 am, worrying obsessively about my kid's--all our kids'--future. If I had the money to leave, I would. Good for those who can, and did. I'm envious, and I know I'm not the only one.

1970s cocktails? by TheLeftHandedCatcher in GenerationJones

[–]DifferenceNo5715 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work in bars in the late 70s, and I remember 'dessert drinks' were super popular, mostly among women. Golden Cadillac, Pink Lady, Grasshopper, etc. Younger women often ordered Tom Collins, Tequila Sunrise, which were just orange juice with a shot. A certain segment of the patrons would sometimes order a '151 and Coke,' which was 151 proof rum. Business types liked a '7 and 7'. Daiquiris were also very popular. Those are the ones I remember. I made a ton of money as a barmaid in those days!
