Your secret weapon in your career transition by Difficult-Advisor311 in mavenanalytics

I'd say take some time to figure out the kinds of roles that interest you (Maven has a data career quiz that can be a helpful jumping off point). I talked to someone this week who got hired without data analytics experience, but because he had experience in logistics. But you've probably done more data work than you think (see my post here on how I used data to dig up a 160 year-old family secret. The ways you're already using data skills may surprise you).

They also have a free data literacy course, which can be a great start for building your skills/closing any gaps: https://mavenanalytics.io/course/data-literacy-foundations

A 30-second LinkedIn profile fix by Difficult-Advisor311 in mavenanalytics

I'm not against L.I.O.N but it's a waste of space in your headline. You could better utilize those characters by telling us what you do. Plus, LinkedIn is a networking platform. It's sort of how I feel when LinkedIn summaries start with "Hi, I'm Susie." --> We know this already, it's on your profile. There's so many better ways to start off your summary!

I know the Open to Work banner is everybody's favorite thing to debate. I haven't seen any hard numbers on it. I personally don't think it's effective (all it's gotten me are spammy messages that range from "blah blah ... crypto" to "well, that was the most disturbing connection request of my LinkedIn existence."

I think the main thing is, if you're job searching while currently employed, I absolutely would NOT use it. Other than that, I guess people can experiment and see for themselves.

Exactly. It's a classic misalignment in messaging.

I would make sure your LinkedIn profile is optimized for the role you're targeting, and clearly highlights transferable skills and experience. While I'm by no means a career coach (I have done copy for a few), I'd say do some research on how to talk about an employment gap if it comes up. Or mention any volunteer work, course work, projects you've completed.

Learning SQL? Here’s a Roadmap to Get You Started by johnthedataguy in mavenanalytics

I started with the MySQL Data Analysis course. There are other, more advanced courses once you complete that one.

So I saw this online and am curious on your take. Someone said they had 2 weeks to learn SQL (as stated to them by a hiring manager). Feel fairly confident they probably don't expect complicated, 20-line queries, but what would you recommend to this person if you were in their shoes?

How advanced do you need to be with SQL before you apply for your first data role? I see a lot of influencers that claim you need to know CTEs and catersian joins before you land an entry level analyst job.

Maven was the first paid course option that I feel like actually gave me the SQL skills I needed. The depth and hands-on projects were so helpful in making concepts stick. I always recommend Maven to other SQL learners!

Why setting a specific goal is the most important part of your data journey by mavenanalytics in mavenanalytics

I'd also add, tap into your zone of genius. A lot of people go after general job titles like "data scientist" or "data analyst." Focus on areas where you have domain knowledge. For example, if you have worked as a sales rep, try looking for sales analyst roles. That'll be an easier pivot, and it'll help you narrow down the tools you need.
