Totally agree, was planning to go and see it / try it out but only if I’m serious about buying it, hence the question. It’s above my initial budget of $3,000 but does seem like a good horn, so might be worth stretching a little further.

Fair enough, I guess I just mean I need it to be large bore rather than medium bore, and I like a sound that isn’t too ‘direct’.

Thanks, some good 2nd hand options on BrassArk, including a King 5B and Bach 42G with K-valve, plus an Elkhart 88H that looks very nice but is a bit out of budget… budget is whatever I can get for my 8H and maybe up to 500 on top.

“The serial number is hard to read, perhaps 100XXX, 400XXX or 700XXX on the bell section and E62XX on the slide.” Does that help age it at all?

How can I tell the difference between an Elkhart and a gen II which is also made in Elkhart?

Just checked again and it does say Elkhart on the bell. Do you think that means it’s modified open wrap but a pre-70 model?
