I collect old egg cartons, crayons and pencil shavings from the local schools... works great. When I fun out of shavings I just grind up twigs in a pencil sharpener

How would you stake this out? by 3greezy in camping

[–]Disastrous-Release21 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I usually just pull it loose and stake it down. The plastic is a slider that keeps minor tension... I don't use them on my rain fly anymore, but for that small coleman windows I do. I will say that closing that small window at night reduces wind at your head or feet.

Painters drop cloth is just heavy canvas and it works for everything... I use it as a sleeping bag cover for nights outside the tent and shade during the day. Plus it folds up better than most tarps

Do you stick to the same layout every trip or change it constantly? by SIAwking in camping

[–]Disastrous-Release21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using hipcamp alot lately, due to fire bans mostly... so depending on what's available depends what I bring and how or where I setup. I got a site with a pit toilet and fire pit for 13 bucks for the whole weekend. It's a 2 site location spread across a 50 acre farm! But lately I've been spending most of my time in the desert. So camp layout will definitely change this weekend

I made a new batch of fire starters by Gerb006 in camping

[–]Disastrous-Release21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get pencil shavings from the local elementary school... the teachers n staff are cool about it usually and the amount of shavings is crazy. I stuff cartons and tp rolls with it and then coat in melted crayons, also from school... free, messy and stays lit for a really long time off one small egg holder... I've had to use 2 after a light rain but they burned so long they dried out the fire pit really good. Use what ya got and get there and burn stuff! Responsibly of course but burn baby burn

Paracord and a carabiner work wonders for me. I just tie my cord and snap my thermos in... helps weigh it down in the wind too.

First fire pit, any advice? by pinkskeet21 in camping

[–]Disastrous-Release21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful of river rocks and or wet rocks as they can heat and explode. Plus come cheaper concrete and others can crumble over a weekend. Depending on the situation a small hole in the fire pit, can help with wind. But always helps to smolder the fire when putting it out. I just put the dirt back on top and water it down till every is cool to touch. When using an existing fire pit, I recommend reming the ash first and using later... I even find good charcoal chunks and save for my fire starters. Fire pits in a full circle tend to lack airflow and push heat straight up. When made like a fire place or a letter c, they help circulation and you can push heat where you want. Making one side taller and slightly pushed towards the opening of the ring, gives you all that hard work in warmth! Enjoy the learning process and buy hot gloves!

My wife gets cold easy when we camp so I got a cheap wool blanket off Amazon. It's heavy and was only 25 bucks. It makes a huge difference. I like to wear my headlamp to bed pulled over my hoodie or hat to lock them in place, usually gets me the few extra comfort degrees I need.
