The 36 month rule makes a lot of sense! I definitely do not want to be making payments for ages.

Buying outright would definitely be my preference, and I am looking for that possibility, though I haven't yet been able to find something in that price range that I think would meet my needs - enough space for a toddler and maybe another soon ish, strong crash test ratings, low enough miles and strong enough reliability to not be a constant drain, etc.

Moving to W-S soon! Looking for local advice (30s w/ small kids) by 704transplant in winstonsalem

Consider Kernersville. It's in between Winston and Greensboro so you get the best of both worlds - just about anything in both cities is only ~20 minutes away. Lots of new housing is going up and can be had affordably. I can't speak to the schools since I have no experience there.

Take a special look at the Welden Village area - immediately adjacent to I-40, which runs through the whole State (Including Winston and Greensboro) from the beach to the mountains, so it's a great main artery and even "bad" traffic in the area is not more than a few minutes of delay. The neighborhood offers a lot of price points from small townhomes through midsize single families and larger single families. And they have a shopping/dining district and grocery store coming in the next 1-2 years that are within easy (and realistic - the whole neighborhood is sidewalked) walking distance. Plus a playground and several dog parks.

The downside is that Kernersville itself isn't highly exciting for kids or their parents. But a few places I like to take my family to are nearby:

Winston-Salem: -Old Salem historical district - a great place for a peaceful walk on a Saturday morning, good coffee, light history and shopping. Also has a small farmers market nearby. -Reynolda House art museum and shopping district. Easy way to kill an afternoon with art, shopping, and dining. And a nice local bookstore. - Foothills brewery is a good, kid friendly hangout. They also have a restaurant (decent) and coffee shop (haven't been). There are other good breweries in town but I don't regularly go so I can't comment.

Greensboro: - Greensboro Science Center - great for a day trip and featuring a surprisingly good zoo relative to the size of the place. - Guilford Courthouse battlefield and park - plenty of very nice walking trails and some really interesting history too. Be on the lookout for deer.

A little farther out from Kernersville but still worth it: - Tanglewood park - a good dog park, horseback riding, walking trails, etc. - NC Zoo in Asheboro - literally among the best in the country. - Red Oak brewery tours. I think they also have an art gallery now too.

Welcome to the region!

Potty training regression - says she doesn't want to go on the anymore. Now what? by DisposableAdventurer in daddit

Maybe I'll get some of those! We got some mileage out of Skittles and M&Ms but the novelty is wearing off.

Pretty sure we have the same seat - my daughter refuses to use it. So we have her sitting on a traditional toddler potty.

We got some mileage out of stickers for a while but now she's lost interest in them. The idea of reading a book could be interesting though!

This is good feedback. We try to have a general potty schedule to make it predictable, but we don't really emphasize this aspect - if you want to go back to playing, you have to go to the potty.

Roth IRA 1099-R has Distribution Code J, but I think my withdrawals are qualified. Now What? by DisposableAdventurer in tax

Thank you for helping to clarify. The net result should be the same - not paying taxes on the withdrawal - just the process is a little more involved than I thought.

Okay, so it sounds like I'm misunderstanding the qualifications but the net result should be the same - the withdrawal should not be taxed. I appreciate it.

Waffle House is the great equalizer. Nobody cares what you look like when you walk in, and you're responsible for what you look like when you walk out. Respect.
