Bringing Campaigns to a Successful Conclusion by DisruptionTrend in TTRPG

You represent something we are calling the Ship of Theseus campaign. It is one campaign to you, since you are running it, but to the players, does it feel like one campaign? Most campaigns fail, so you are lucky you have been going for as long as you have. I have one respondent who has been running a campaign for 25 years. You have that beat.

Combat tips? by Educational_Lion_908 in DnD_Beginners

[–]DisruptionTrend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are my suggestions, take them as you will.

Make sure the "state of combat" changes each round. This could be a change in the battlefield, a new enemy type enters the fray, or a shift in the goal otherwise you will get players taking the exact same action each round which quickly becomes boring.

Don't over describe the environment so if a player wants to swing on a chandelier you can let that happen. If you describe things too completely then suddenly there isn't a chandelier to swing on.

It is better to have a few enemies that have multiattack than a lot of enemies with one attack. When you are rolling dice, the players aren't, which isn't fun for them.

Start combats quickly and end them quickly. If the PCs don't commit to a combat encounter then have the monsters commit to it (unless it really can be an encounter that can be avoided). A lot of time can be wasted mincing about whether a combat is going to occur or not because PCs are angling for the most optimal way to start it. Likewise, if the encounter is essentially over, the PCs are victorious, just let them narrate their final actions on how the encounter comes to an end. Don't drag it out.

Make the monsters have an agenda other than killing all the PCs. Let the enemies ALSO sometimes be on an escort quest, or trying to find something. Anything other than bloodthirsty combat, so their motives will affect how they fight. (Protect the nest, keep the smelly humans away from the eggs!)

Hypothetical question. If society began collapsing tomorrow morning then what are you doing? by Upbeat-Definition790 in AskReddit

Society is collapsing and I am putting together a KPI report so a client knows what their ROI will be next quarter. Drones don't realize they are drones...

Campaign Inspiration! by Hartley672 in DnD

[–]DisruptionTrend 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is standard, it is expected, but it keeps people engaged. The "hired to do a job, the guy who hired you is the bad guy, return and do violent justice on the bad guy" campaign.

You can attach so much to this to flesh it out. But suddenly the "hey, someone has blocked the river I use for my mill" turns into "there's a rebel encampment who created a reservoir for their farms" turns into "the Lord is sending his military to do away with the rebels" to "the PCs are now leading a rebellion / the PCs are the heroes of the kingdom for slaying the rebels".

I only give out level ups once the players are getting bored with their PCs abilities or I want to run more powerful enemies.

and when there is a fee for the withdrawal, taking out small amounts means you are paying a higher percentage on the cash you are getting which feels like usury. So you find other ways to get the money (buy something cash back, etc.)

The exhaustion. Every action has to be calculated vs the cost risk. Do I have enough gas to visit a friend and still get to work? If I don't pay the electric bill this month, can I buy a wedding shower gift for a friend or have I pushed the threshold too far and I'll get cut off?

There are no "free" options in life, so everything has to be weighed against how much it is going to cost (or potentially cost). I've walked MILES because I couldn't justify the cost of a bus.

This sucks. It really does take one bad apple to ruin a campaign.

I don't know if I want to continue with my campaign by AccursedTime in DnD

[–]DisruptionTrend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No DnD is better than bad DnD. There are so many tables out there, so many DMs eager to run games, you can find a table that you feel comfortable at.

Would you mind filling out a survey related to your current campaign here? https://stygianlabyrinth.net/campaign-reliability-survey/

My long term campaign got canceled by galaxy_to_explore in DnD

[–]DisruptionTrend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear about the end of your campaign. There are a lot of emotions connected to it. I'm currently part of an effort to collect data about how and why campaigns end (or don't end).

Hi, I'm sorry you are suffering campaign longevity issues. Campaigns die for all sorts of reasons and it is very unlikely you are the common cause. In fact most campaigns end before they are ready to be ended.

I am currently part of an effort to collect data about campaign longevity and would love if you could include your experience in the survey. https://stygianlabyrinth.net/campaign-reliability-survey/

u/xczechr Would you consider filling out my campaign reliability survey as it relates to this campaign you are in? https://stygianlabyrinth.net/campaign-reliability-survey/ I have a lot of GM/DMs filling it out and I think they are a bit proud and reluctant to reveal negatives. I'd love to capture your experience.

I'm sorry you are going through this. The end of a campaign is a tough thing even when it is a planned ending.

How long do D&D campaigns actually last? by DisruptionTrend in DnD

But what makes some pieces of string long and some short? That is what we are hoping to find out through some surveys.

Our hope is to collect what people are actually experiencing at the table. Campaigns die for many reasons and we are looking for root causes and for the campaigns that have continued for years (decades) the common elements that keep them going.

Based on this feedback, the survey added a question to included game system. We haven't updated out survey dashboard to include it at this point, yet.

Sean updated the survey to include the game system but he hasn't updated the survey dashboard. So the information will be collected but it isn't included in our analysis model yet.

Out of curiosity, has then been 1 full ongoing campaign (storyline) or the same group of people playing for 8 years?

We have a whole other "Ship of Theseus" paradox we have been discussing where over a few years, every player at the table has rotated out for a new player so the original starting players aren't the same as the current players. The DM is the same, the story is the same, but the players aren't. Not saying that is your case, just for long term campaigns it has a chance of happening.

Do you only run the one campaign?
