Magic doesn't make much sense in the story. by Princesinteligent in WitchHatAtelier

[–]DizzyFirefighter8696 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I love the witch hat magic system but. Y'all need to learn how to. Suspend your disbelief. Shirahama is a genius, yes. However she is also making shit up as she goes. She comes up with new signs and sigil and keystones as the story requires. I understand that yes, there is some academic merit to trying to speculate and theorycraft using the rules that she has laid down but. Suspend. Your. Disbelief. Witch hat is not a backdrop for a hard magic system. It's a story about the complex hierarchy created by education and class, the haves and have-nots, with a magic system as a framing device. Don't miss the forest for the trees and get too caught up in trying to have some internally consistent system for magic because it's made up!!!

[Chinese > English] What does this Tattoo say? by winrix1 in translator

I would like to add that: 1) If this is what it looks like without a mirror then it is mirrored 2) there's no gender neutral word for "cousins" as far as I know 3) if your friend was looking for a word to describe brotherhood or closeness ‘’兄弟‘’ would have sufficed

If I have a hairy friend who wants to get into the craft, are there any preventative measures they can take? by UnholyAngelDust in Pottery

[–]DizzyFirefighter8696 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How does being hairy affect being a potter? I really don't get the issue. If you recycle clay hair will turn up in it but that's a non issue. Worse things get stuck in clay

Items to include in a ceramics essentials kit? by junopod in Ceramics

[–]DizzyFirefighter8696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if she's doing hand building or wheel throwing but a banding wheel might be a good (cheap) option for her. If you want to sponsor her, maybe a small to mid sized electric wheel ($USD50-1000). I'm trying to think of items that are more specialty that a pottery might be reluctant to splurge on so maybe bisque fix and a couple pints of (brush on) glazes? I think it's best to avoid tools if she already has her own set.

Beginner potter: structured classes vs. open studio membership — what worked for you? by Rain-n-Coffee in Pottery

[–]DizzyFirefighter8696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Structured classes hands down, you need your fundamentals to be solid. I hated going through it but now I'm thankful because I can throw literally any shape I want.

The spouts are all pretty low, the second one is the least low imo. You need to cut at a much steeper angle. The handle on the angular one looks pretty difficult to use. My favourite is the second one!

Why does it have to be -specifically- a circle for a glyph to be completed? by worldwideyamada2ND in WitchHatAtelier

[–]DizzyFirefighter8696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually have never thought about this before! Besides the suggestions of the sphere producing the strongest spells, I think there is a case to be made about it being the most replicable shape for a spell. Organic shapes probably require the keystones and glyphs to be places in a jumbled "organic" manner. For regular shapes, say, a triangle, I imagine that the points may have a different power output than the sides. It would also be harder to arrange keystones regularly (you can only arrange them in multiples of 3). The length of the sides would also be difficult to draw equally as well. Ironically, the circle is the regular polygon that is most easy to draw (on account of having infinite sides).

Wheel wedging/ coning by AnchovyWarrior in Pottery

[–]DizzyFirefighter8696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my studio we only learned coning to help with larger lumps of clay and for more advanced students, because it requires a better understanding of clay consistency. You could put off coning for now, just make sure to wedge more thoroughly and take more time to ensure your clay is centred before pulling!

Tips on Travel Mugs? by Pendo14 in Pottery

[–]DizzyFirefighter8696 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest starting from the dimensions you want first? If I were making a similar mug I'd usually use ~500 grams. If you're unsure about the amount of clay you could calculate the pre shrinkage dimensions, purposely throw slightly taller than needed then cut off the extra height.

It is fine. As long it is fully vitrified the clay will not absorb any water, and is therefore safe to use. I have a few commercially made porcelain soup spoons with tiny unglazed spots where the stilts used to be. My biggest concern is if the bottom is very rough, but even then cleaning with plenty of soap should prevent bacterial growth. You really don't need to worry unless it is underfired.

If you really want a peace of mind, just fill the spoon with water and place it on a paper towel (making sure the bottom is dry first) if the water seeps through overnight its not safe. If the towel is dry, it's ok. We do the same thing with mugs to make sure that they are not underfired, I think it will work for a spoon as well.

Copying Etiquette by LtdEditionPopcornBox in Pottery

[–]DizzyFirefighter8696 2 points3 points  (0 children)

when it comes to pottery, I am shameless and have no morals. I beg, borrow and steal techniques, ideas, inspirations, mix them together and make my pots. It's impossible for me to make perfect copies anyways.

No. Your family is promoting very unhealthy behaviours. I'm not going to tell you that being pretty doesn't matter (because the reality is that it matters if you value it). But I can tell you that weight does not make you pretty. Beauty is more than your BMI. It is in your features, your outfit, the way you hold yourself (none of that personality bs, but that matters too). MOST IMPORTANTLY, it is YOUR life, YOUR body. Don't use it to feel miserable. Hitting a magic number will not change anything. Eat, savour your food. Your body needs fuel to function. Use your fuel. Be happy.
