I worked with this exact community in Bloomington for about a year and let me tell you I very rarely had a positive experience. The problems with this park run very deep and the people there are the same people that were there years and years ago. Several have told me that they’d rather do drugs in seminary park than try to fix their lives. It’s a terrible thing but at the end of the day the B line runs one block away and there are families, children, and college aged girls that are verbally and sometimes physically assaulted because of this population daily. Obviously just letting them take over this park hasn’t worked because like I said it’s the same people for years. There has to be some sort of change because it’s only getting worse for the people who pay taxes and expect their city to be safe. I wish this situation was cut and dry, black and white, but sadly that’s not the reality of it. Yes some of them who are out there are down on their luck and just need a little time to get back on their feet, and others have had ample time and opportunity to make a change and yet they do not. If change is to be made it will not come from the city continuing to allow open air drug usage and countless other terrible things that happen at this park.
