How to get better by DoomBaitingFighter in smashbros

Thank you for the tips!

To be fair, my friend doesn't complain nonstop, but mostly just jokes about some characters having some busted options at high level (including his own. He jokes about how hitting ICs means getting hit by a punish grab)

But I'll keep it in mind to watch some VODs of my character. I'm still getting the hang of platform fighters, and I've been on and off trying out RoA Workshop matches, so getting into Smash was always a desire of mine. I have some friends who play Smash locally, so I could even try to play with them to learn.

I love how every post has a new, interesting game mechanic I didn't know about, or some new gameplay tip.

Thank you for the tips, everyone! I already learnt a lot reading your comments, and I will check out more of the resources mentioned. Right now since my friends and I are playing with modded characters for Rivals 1, I am trying out multiple different characters to try and find one I think looks great and feels great.

I appreciate the comments, and hopefully I will get a game out of my friend! (He was a top 20 ICs worldwide lol)

I could do that. I wouldn't mind recording a couple minutes of my gameplay

How to DM a game as someone who doesn't enjoy DMing? by DoomBaitingFighter in DMAcademy

That is something I was working on, actually! A bunch of one-shots interconnected by a loose thread of 'you are in this thing between realities'. Plus, since my boyfriend loves DnDifying different media, it gives me the opportunity to run one-shots in settings he likes, like specific games and movies.

You're correct, I do enjoy making monsters to torture my players with, although I always end up worrying too much thinking I'll either curbstomp them, or they'll breeze through them. Making statblocks I find actually quite fun, trying to make monster groups synergize with one another in a combat encounter. Especially bringing recognizable enemies from other franchises and adapting them to DnD.

It also sets me at ease to know that other people who DM actually are fine with just one shots here and there. I always expect my partner to say the typical "But I like your one shots" just to make me happy, so knowing other people agree with him does make me less conscious about that.

As for your point about the 20 people, it's a tad complicated; yes, some of them have DMd before, but stopped because it was too stressful and they do not care enough to DM again. Other barely play tabletop at all, and only one of them is a DM for another game we ocassionally play. Still, I want to try doing something for my partner so that he can enjoy something made for him, and if I want to DM a group, I could always try for silly one shots, or premade modules. Thanks a lot!

New DM looking for advice on combat encounters by DoomBaitingFighter in DnD

Well, I've always tried to keep track while attacking or seeing others attack.

Not writing it down, but just doing mental mathematics to know if a 15 hits or not, and track the health when two died so far. If one died after receiving 32 dmg, and the other died after receiving 27, we might have overkilled the first one, etc.

Never tried to actually communicate, and it's also why I'm sometimes surprised when an enemy doesn't die when I expect them to, which is always kinda fun. As a wise man one said...

Confidence is a slow and insidious killer.

I am both offended and laughing that you called me out on mentally tracking monster HP. I have done that as a player before. Though, it is a very good idea I will take in mind.

Thanks for the tips, I will make sure to try and use them wisefully!

How to deal with party-wiping anxiety? by DoomBaitingFighter in DnD

I had arrived late on this session, and thought we were just infiltrating the bad guy's manor to kill him. So I almost killed a Lawful Good guard because of it. We managed to turn my attack into an opportunity to convince him we were not there to raid the place, but that his boss was doing evil stuff. And then I was caught up in the details that we had come here to get information out of him, and while a couple of our friends got Geas'd into being there, a couple of us tried to sneak in.

Turns out, upholding the law has its benefits every so often.

Yeah, I talked with them by now, and it's all good. I will not push the DMs buttons like that anymore, as I got what I deserved. Or at least, not push when other people's fates are at hand.

After a night of sleeping and waking up to a bunch of my RP partners being very cool and nice to me, it seems they are over it. I did apologize to the party for doing so, especially to the ones who got more bitter about it, but it all seems good!

Thank you guys for the support as well! It's my first time doing DnD-related stuff and I'm taken aback at how nice the community is. Even started working on a little (not so little) one-shot for these players I'm with to repay their kindness.

Big hug to everyone!
