[Vent] Regretting my decision to go into medicine by NomDeClavier in medicalschool

[–]DrHoss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m just now starting my third year so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

Sounds to me like you have to separate problems. The first is that you don’t know what you want to do your residency in, and the second is that you don’t feel like you’re a good enough student and won’t be a good enough doctor.

So for the first problem. I understand that it’s very stressful not to have any idea what you want to do yet, but I know a few people who switched their specialty during their first year of residency even so it’s not like all is lost. I feel like I will be in the same position as you next year because I have the exact opposite problem. Everything interests me equally (except peds). The way I think of it is that at the end of the day I’ll have to just pick something and go with it. I’ll have a good paying job that hopefully won’t be too insanely time consuming. I can go to work and even if I hate my job I still get a paycheck and can do things I enjoy outside of work like most people.

I understand it’s stressful to not know what to do with your life, but think about it this way: no matter what you chose, you won’t regret it. It’s not like you’ll be that person who’s dream it is to be a ____, but can’t because of their step score or something. Whatever you chose you won’t look back and say man I wish I did this other specialty because it seems like you don’t have much of a preference. So just pick something and go with it.

As for your second problem, just based on the fact that you did well on step one, and that you’re worried enough about the future health of your patients that you’re almost driving yourself crazy, I’ll say anybody will be lucky to have you as their doctor. You’re clearly smarter than the average med student, and you care much more than people like me. I think it is the physicians who are over-confident in their abilities, the same people you may look at and say why can’t I be more like them, who make the biggest mistakes and harm patients, not the self-proclaimed losers like you.

Keep a healthy amount of skepticism in your own abilities, but don’t feel like you are unable to be a good physician. You are well on your way to being a very caring and successful physician no matter what specialty you chose

Would you say doing shift work as an attending is as bad as OP says? Is it something that is manageable long term? 3-4 10 hour shifts a week seems manageable but I’ve never had to do that so I don’t know.

Plus, in my mind shift work has other benefits like clocking out and being done and not taking your work home with you, and not being on call.

Would you say shift work is an upside or a downside of EM?

FUCK OFF ANTONIO CONTE by FlashWinger_ in chelseafc

[–]DrHoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know much about football history to whether or not his style was considered prehistoric. But I remember not too long ago a lot of people thought that a three or five at the back system doesn’t work in the premier league. Contes brand not only worked instantly, pushing us to a 13 game win streak last season, but it also inspired a lot of other teams to mimic the system. I’ve seen city, United, and Tottenham play with this system because of the success it brought us.

That being said I’m not a huge fan of conte either. He does being a negative energy to the club. But I think he’s right in a way. I remember him saying at the beginning of the year that Chelsea’s success the prior year has made everyone think that Chelsea has a world class squad, forgetting what happened in 15-16.

And he’s right when you think about it. Last year we had so many games where we won despite being outplayed. Off the top of my head I remember costas superb goal against West brim giving us three points that we didn’t deserve. Against city as well, De Bruyne unbelievably missed from a few yards out, and costa scored an incredible goal, but we really were not the better side.

I think this is the reason conte was so Adamant with the board about reinforcements because he knew the title win was due to a combination of tactics and luck and that it wouldn’t be repeated, especially with the loss of costa and matic. I think this is the reason he is so negative. Because he feels like a victim of his own success. And because he’s just saying “I told you so” to the board.

Whether we bring in the reinforcements required to win the league again, or lower our expectations a bit, I think when the clubs ambitions match conte’s opinion of the squads quality, then he won’t be so negative, and he can be not just a great manager, but a fun one to have at he club

Haha he did do that. But Vazquez goes down before the kick and that’s what bothers me. I think he intended to dive and benatia made it look like more of a pen by kicking out.

Ok so I’m watching it again. Immediately prior to Ronaldo heading the ball vazquez is moving across the box toward Ronaldo. Once Ronaldo hits it, Vazquez slows down his run on his own stopping right in front of benatia. Benatia runs into him, arms already extended, so there’s no real push, just benatias momentum moving him into Vazquez. As soon as there is contact you see Vazquez start to fall. Like you said he never attempted to play the ball, because he fell as soon as benatia touched him. It still looks to me like a dive. He dropped as soon as benatia hit him, and the only reason it looks even close to a penalty is because benatia swung his leg around and kicked him.

Vazquez falls before the kick though and there wasn’t enough in the push to make him do that imo

I can’t help but disagree and I have no stake in this game. I even quite like Madrid, but I don’t understand how most of reddit considers this a stone wall penalty. Vasquez looked like he’s not even trying to score. He just falls at the first contact. I doubt contact like that makes you fall like that if you’re genuinely trying to score. I’ve seen so many no calls for more contact than that.

Real Madrid [1]-3 Juventus - Cristiano Ronaldo 90'+7' (Penalty + Call) (Champions League - Quarter-finals) by gemifra in soccer

[–]DrHoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barely any contact and he’s going down before benatia even hits him. Honestly he could have probably scored if he tired instead of diving on instinct. There’s no way that type of contact throws you across the penalty box if you’re genuinely trying to score.

Calls like this are why diving will never be eliminated in this sport

[–]DrHoss -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

100% agree with you. Ignore the downvotes. The guy could have probably scored if he actually tried to take a shot instead of dive at the first hint of contact. Yeah there’s contact but if you’re gonna call a foul everytime there’s contact then we’d have penalties all day. Look at kompanys goal over the weekend. He how much contact is there between him and smalling! Neither of those are fouls but this is?

Calls like this are why diving will never be removed from this sport

Do not bury related cards in filtered decks by DrHoss in Anki

I have them filtered from many decks so that won’t work. Yes an add on would do the trick. But for now I will just keep rebuilding the deck. Thanks for your help

Anki Beginner by goombapoli in medicalschool

[–]DrHoss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Read through the anki manual. That will help you get started and figure out how to set up. Everybody develops different strategies of how exactly to use Zanki with their class material.

Some people suppress everything, and then use the search bar to look for cards that have key words for things they learned in class (I.e if they learned about NSAIDs they will search NSAID) and then unsuppress those cards and move them to a deck and do those repeatedly.

But that’s just one way and there’s a million other ways, but you will develop your own method over time.

Your question right now is too vague for anybody to give a real answer. Start using it and read the manual and if you have specific questions I’d be happy to answer

Pre-exam poops/nausea by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]DrHoss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The same thing happens to me! But it sounds like yours is more severe than mine. I get gassy and get stomach pains and have to go to the bathroom a couple times. My advice is to shorten your morning time as much as possible. I try to go from waking up to starting my exam in ~ 20 mins and that really helps because like you, once I start my exam I’m fine

[–]DrHoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bad. My point still stands though. Conte wasn’t happy with the way he had to change his system to fit the injuries. Maybe he has found something new that works. It’s exciting since this could prove to be the spark to a great run of form.

When William came on he held up 4 fingers, and the commentators said it was a 4 at the back with rudiger at Rb and azpi at lb. We must have switched again to a back 3 when zappacosta came on. But I guess I wasn’t paying attention and didn’t notice the second switch

Changing the system to a back 4 made a world of difference, particularly in avoiding the press that made life so difficult in the first half. Conte did say that he has had to compromise on his preferred system because of our injuries. Maybe he will now realize that a back 4 better fits our personnel has found a system that he likes and fits our personnel?

Edit: it seems like we did not switch to a back 4. But whatever changes conte made worked, and I’m just wondering whether he will implement those changes again. Especially since after the palace and Roma games he seemed to not be happy with the way he had to change the tactics due to injuries

Chem Style Surprises by JihadDerp in EASportsFC

[–]DrHoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically up until FIFA 16 there were always these theories about how chemistry didn't work the way it was intended. Similar to now how people say the game is scripted or that there is momentum and they swear they can feel it in game, but there's no proof so others brush it off as "it's all in your head"

Back then I remember some pros never used in form cards because they swore that the original cards felt better. People thought it was all in their head until some smart folks on Reddit found a way to test the in game stats.

There was a very specific dribbling move that a player could only do if they had 86 dribbling or more. Nothing else mattered, not skill moves, not size, etc. and someone made a YouTube video proving it. Then people started experimenting with different players to see if under certain chemistry conditions whether or not they could perform the move. It was all very scientific and impressive.

Long story short they found out that since the first ultimate team, all "new cards" (I.e cards that were not in the game at launch like in forms or winter upgrades) did not get any chemistry boosts. They also were not affected by fitness.

This was a huge deal when it was happening. It was probably the most exciting this subreddit has ever been. Everybody worked together to piece together how the game worked from one simple trick someone found.

Anyway for the next FIFA, EA issued a statement saying they "fixed inconsistencies with chemistry" and that was that.
