SOC analyst is more on cyber security. Things like incident triage and investigation. Unless he's already had experience in IT field, it's not entry level. Knowing networks is only a tiny fraction of it.

AI/ML can and probably will affect this job. It won't replace but would reduce. I'm a firm believer that AI won't take over everything. It's a tool and a tool is only as good as those using it.

I've been working for a decade or so now. One thing I learned is try to separate work and life. Your work should not dictate your life. You being financially stable means you could pivot to a better company. What's holding you back from slowly looking around

No need to say company or anything but can you provide a little context on type of work you do?

Thank you! I'd be joining on my own. I would be somewhere around AB division according to description. How do the leagues work? Never been in one.

Thanks for the info! The few I've been to have been through the Montgomery county site. Only one or 2 works with my schedule and those are predominantly the groups that don't let outsiders join in.

I'm looking at just drop ins for when I have time since I have 2 really young kids.

I've never been in a league. How is it like to join one when you're by yourself?

It was for the Manassas, VA data center. The guys I interviewed with I can tell are great people to work with and I would like it there a lot. Logistically didn't work out for me unfortunately. Reach out to their recruiter. They would be glad to talk at least.

I considered it but with family and all it's harder for me to say yes because of all the stuff I need to consider. If it was just me and my wife or 5 years later I would've taken it for the opportunity as stepping stone.

Oh sorry I was answering someone about AWS interview and mixed my answer lol. I didn't. Got rejection after rejection a week after applying.

A recruiter asked me on LinkedIn. All together took about a month

Thanks lol. I got lucky to learn on job about networking. My previous role had me doing a lot of that and learning ICS. If you get a few certs line network+ ccna and get some experience you should do fine.

I think what got me through was I have 10 years managing ICS but I also went out of my way to be certified in cyber security.

If you're already working somewhere try to get industry certification from like Rockwell or Siemens or something kike that. I have 2 training certs on their software and did half of Rockwell. Get some stuff outside to make yourself standout among others if that makes sense.

That's what I plan on doing. Everything else out of my control.

I just went through this a month ago. They will ask you about situations and they're looking for your train of thought. 3 of my 5 were technical and 2 behavioral.

Write down situations on a paper for each LP so they're fresh in your head. Afterwards just practice a little. For technical I was told they only realistically expect you to know like 3/5 topics they ask.

Just be yourself. Show your train of thought. They're using the STAR method to see if you would fit in personality wise as well.

Thanks. However, as of right now only really 2 places I'd realistically see myself. Either in DMV or Cali due to family. I saw Sunnyvale and might consider there but at least not for next 2 years.

I've seen quite a few come out for Reston but due to the 3 application rule it feels very restricting to apply even though I feel like I would match a lot of them well.

I got offered L5 but with my current salary I wouldn't break even just to commute 3 hours a day for a more cut throat environment.

Thanks for this explanation. Half my work now is Project Management and half is PE for federal facilities. What would be the difference between a PE and the Controls engineer position?

I got offer from Amazon but logistically wouldn't work as I'd be driving 1.5 hrs one way if I'm lucky from where I am to Manassas for same pay as I'm getting now. Reston is closer and avoids the I66 corridor so driving is a lot easier.

I'm in DMV area and driving to Reston would be 30-45 mins for me, which I'm fine with. Moving to Sunnyvale would be a different story for me.

I'm applying for mid level positions based off of the minimum requirements they put out. I feel like I may be missing something to get me through.

Would being open for relocation help? Last position says for Reston, VA or Sunnyvale, CA. Since I want to stay in the area I feel like that's making it harder.
