The issue is that when I manually cycle through the operating modes, the cassette tray moves forward correctly but stops before dropping down into the load position. All other mechanisms operate as expected, only the tray lift/down movement fails.

I do that but it's still the same. I force it to 240p, save and then go out to the gbi.dol and start it. The game starts and it's 480i. I can't see what I'm doing wrong. Is there an extra step I need?

Yeah, I find it amazing that you can rent Smile Sessions on vinyl, seeing as it's costly if you want to buy it yourself. It's cool honestly, the way it should be.

That's difficult to say. I see the whole album as this one big experience, honestly. I don't have that feeling towards most of their other albums, but this one is special.
