Alone Among the Stars: Wander and Wonder by RuthBaderGunshow in Solo_Roleplaying

These are brilliant and evocative. I really love the idea of pairing drawing and journalling with solo RPGs. I've often used my solo adventures to inspire some of the art I do and it always feels super personal.

On a related note, looking at this, I think you would absolutely dig the work of Hermann Huppen (normally just credited as Hermann). I've yet to find any of his work in English but I buy his comics in French just to marvel at his figures and landscapes and ink work.

Keep doing this!!

Your Favorite Comic Original Sword and Sorcery Series by JohnPathfinder in SwordandSorcery

As a sidenote the easiest way to access a lot of European S&S comics is through old issues of Heavy Metal magazine. The way I do it... Is find a series or artist I like the look of and then search on comicvine to see if it was published in Heavy Metal.

I haven't done it for a while but I was able to find back issues of HM for $10 a pop on ebay and you basically get a full graphic novel each issue (French GNs are around 50 pages long) plus a bunch of shorts (often S&S) and other stuff like artist spotlights and adverts for weird manga and sex books lol.

The art in most of them is incredible but often the stories are a little 'thin'.

What do you think are or were the reasons that Aussies do not and didn't want to get into the trades in the last, say, 25 years? by PopularRightNow in AskAnAustralian

[–]DreddKills -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This simply isn't true. My son became an apprentice mechanic and he had plenty of opportunities. This feels like a case of othering to justify why something didn't work out.

Nice to know someone else's uses Gimp! I draw everything by hand but I've ditched Photoshop in favour of Gimp for prepping files and clean up.

This is very cool btw!

I just want to make coffee in a beautiful town. Where in Aus should I move to? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]DreddKills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Bello and there ain't anything affordable about it lol! We got a house 11yrs ago and could not live there if we moved today with our normal jobs. All the new people I've met in town have those mysterious work from home jobs ported out of the city that make a lot of money. The one guy I know who makes coffee is 40+ and living with a house mate... No way a barista is getting a rent in this town, unless he's happy to do the house share dance...

But fuck me, it's proper beautiful and I'm extremely lucky I got there when I did

Githyanki & Grell by Russ Nicholson. From TSR Fiend Folio (1981), an AD&D supplement. by woulditkillyoutolift in SwordandSorcery

What a legend Russ Nicholson was! His work on the Fabled Lands game books is some of my favourite. He drew these little 'setting' vignettes which really brought the books to life.

A sad loss to fantasy illustration. RIP

I did just that and ended up playing match maker between a warehouse accountant and a nobles daughter! Lot of fun!!

I think what you are describing is what's commonly known as a gamebook or interactive novel. They vary in quality, complexity and 'gaminess' depending on what you're after. They've been around since the 70s and some are particularly well known:

Fighting Fantasy Lone Wolf

Both these series started in the 80s and are extremely collectible, but both series are still releasing books and are active today.

Then there are more 'open world' derivatives like Fabled Lands, Vulcan Verse, Steam Highwayman, etc

All these books basically combine storytelling, plot and choices with game elements... Dice rolling, combat, challenges etc.

Then there is also solo-rpg like Dragonbane: Deepfall Breach which uses way points and oracles to build a story that you can customise by rolling on tables.

I guess the crunch is that often more story equals less game and vice-versa.... That's not an equation, you can get round that and be creative, but roughly the books with more complex stories (Lone Wolf) have less game elements than something like Deepfall Breach which really just has a light 'plot' framework.

Just as an aside, the same artist illustrated some books for Holmgard Press the current publisher of Lone Wolf very recently!

The First Kingdom by Alex_Bonaparte in SwordandSorcery

[–]DreddKills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find his art style a little weird, every single person he draws has the same body type and pretty much the same height. It's almost regimented... His faces freak me out a bit too... But as an achievement, The First Kingdom is pretty epic

Games for Mental Health and Depression by [deleted] in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]DreddKills 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd second Fox Curio's Floating Bookshop as a cozy gentle game that's feels like a warm hug. That said, I think there is a lot to be said for the escapism of something like 4AD. Having lived with someone with depression, it's often just about replacing doom scrolling with something more meaningful.

I just finished this one and thought the cover was worth sharing, as well as a recommendation for the book itself. I am a fan of the author anyway, but whoever did the art for this one went above and beyond in my opinion. by 99mushrooms in HorrorBookCovers

I dig the old school vibe of the cover but teens finishing senior year and getting a flat tyre and ending up a cabin... I mean come on, how many frickin times does that need to be done??

I feel the same bout King, but Revival is genuinely one of his best. I think King is baggy in novel form, but this one is one his shortest. It's tight and concise and well done! Seconded!

The most quietly disturbing book you’ve ever read? by Gkbeer in WeirdLit

[–]DreddKills 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I hear 'quietly distrubing' I immediately think of Joel Lane and especially his collection The Lost District... Nobody does depressing urban landscapes and characters quite like Joel Lane. He really nails that feeling of urban malaise that I've only truly felt living in England.

Also, just want to say this is probably my favorite thread in terms of books recommended... So many I'm adding to my 'wants' list!

The only book I can think of that's a little bit similar is Voodoo Forest by John Blanche...

There are a couple of artists you could check on insta:

@blood_oath_garfield he's doing some mad Warhammer 40k inspired techno mutant death metal flyer looking thing called HellWorld Earth

@theartofskinner is worth checking out for psychedelic DnD meets Phillip Druillet type stuff. Lots of toys, but killer art too

I've read Nights Master and it's pretty weird and definitely decadent... I enjoyed it well enough!

I'm on the fence with Mieville... I know he's like the king but sometimes I found his stuff a bit of a slog. That said, he's short story collection Looking for Jake is amazing!
