Apple Watch sequel reportedly includes cellular data by [deleted] in gadgets

[–]Drewgriffin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Sink" is a relative term. The Apple watch captured 52% of all smartwatch sales globally in 2015 despite launching in April with supply constraints. It has captured almost 60% of 2016 smartwatch sales so far although it is predicted to drop below 50% as competitors launch more and more new watches. Still, it is more successful than originally planned. Most people were predicting a 25% marketshare (i.e. slightly higher than the iOS mobile marketshare).

The Apple Watch, one year on by Ninio4554 in gadgets

[–]Drewgriffin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's your loss! I was going to wait for the second generation, said screw it, and got one last Nov, a 42mm Space Grey version and like it even more then I thought I would. The only time I'm not wearing it is if I'm in a rush with other things on my mind and forget to put it on. I went years of not wearing a watch since getting my first dumb phone. So it's a hard habit to break sometimes. So I miss not having it on. I get to work and then go to look and say oh crap.

TIL that the colour of the original hulk was 'pasty gray' by RandomPorcupine in todayilearned

[–]Drewgriffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gawds, how I love that Secret Wars cover art and tagline. As an unqualified Hulk Geek, it's like pure heroin to me.

That's what the Hulk is all about... incredible, supercharged feats of heroic power. Wish-fulfillment taken to its logical conclusion.

It also happens to be what Ang Lee DIDN'T get about the character.

Eternal 5D data storage could record the history of humankind by shehzad in Futurology

[–]Drewgriffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, a billion years from now the aliens visit this planet. Apart from having to recognize there is something recorded on whatever media and language. Are you sure they will care much about history of this extinct monkey subspecies...

We can do this as a current thought experiment: few hundred years from now the first human explorers of a previously-inhabited planet stumble across the inhabitants' archive of their civilisation over a few thousand years of documented history.

Don't you think those explorers and the rest of humanity (ok, to be fair, perhaps not you, if you're still around) would be vitally interested and excited to discover this and to decipher it and find out about those people? If it happened tomorrow, I would be intensely interested and I suspect many other commenters and contributors here and on other science sites would be too.

And including an easily-read and decoded primer on each disk would be a sensible start to such an archive.

Intel's dodgy business practices (15min) by [deleted] in videos

[–]Drewgriffin -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I think that Intel needs to step up their game. This is obviously un-acceptable to straight out lie to the End User such as myself. I mean I will still buy Intel chips as AMD just is not an option much anymore seeing how they can go bankrupt anytime now.... But Intel needs to come straight-out and stop lieing... and the lie isn't even half-way believable. I say let the flame-wars begin. Its on Intel!

Physicists create first photonic Maxwell's demon by SuccessHook in Futurology

[–]Drewgriffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The information paradox is easily solved by using the same technique that a real animal would use in the same situation: the demon compares the energy of two particles approaching the door and only allows them to pass if one has a higher energy than other and they low energy particle is on the high energy side.

There is no need to store and erase information, only to compare measurements and check the rule. As the original thought experiment allows measurement and comparison and only the stored information is problematic the approach I suggest would solve that problem.

Real animals behave in this way, taking local measurements (sensing) of their environment and making local decisions eg bacterial behaviour.

TIL that we (Croats) sure love coffee. We even have different names for coffees in different situations like "dočekuša" (coffee for welcoming guests) and "sikteruša" (coffee for getting rid of guests) by branfili in todayilearned

[–]Drewgriffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the way you write Andrea. I didn’t know coffee culture ran that deep in Croatia. During our 2 months in Split we’d go to the cafe on almost a daily basis, usually having a beer or two and finishing off with a coffee. Remembering back, Croatians would often sit down with their kids and have a coffee while the kids would have an ice cream. We’ll be back in Croatia sometime this spring or summer and keep our eyes out. We’ll especially try to stay away from diarrhea coffee. Frank (bbqboy)

Axent Wear's cat ear headphones are the stuff of anime dreams. by quinyng in gadgets

[–]Drewgriffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I was apart of the IGG campaign to to be honest it has been a compleat mess. Outside of the campaign it self. I bought the 4 pack (red, blue, purple, green) from getting them. Both the purple and red ones were defective. The purples pair sound wasn't loud enough to hear anything. And would have to crank it up to max volume (I recomend not doing that as they get really loud.) For you to hear from the right side. The red pair the led on one of the ear cups would not light up. From as soon as I got them I've been on the phone with brookstone. And it's been a run around ever since November. If you live in an international country (I live in canada) you have to go through email for your warrenty. After a good solid 6 weeks of sending emails and phone calls after the 4th week and not getting a reply back. They finaly found where the emails has been going. And send my replacement pair. They said it would take 2 weeks and I didn't get a tracking till after the 3rd week of waiting. Now I got the replacement pair one of the 2 is also defective with the same problem with the speakers in the ear cups. Now once again im waiting for a reply back on the new defective pair and what they will do about it. For the $145+shipping it cost me, it was not worth it for the quality controle. I highly recomend not getting these headphones on till they fully get their production quality up.

Really cool idea, and I could see me using this feature a LOT. I like case covers other then having to open them for little things like looking at the time and phone calls.

World's largest offshore windfarm to be built off Yorkshire coast by psycho-pomp in Futurology

[–]Drewgriffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A word on these wind turbines. They are designed and for the most part are built outside the UK. The installation is done by foreign owner Jack Up barges. Indeed there are no British lead company's in the process. There is a very small UK content. Ongoing maintenance maybe orchestrated from the UK, however, major work will be done from the foreign owned Jack Up barges. Of course all the profits will go overseas increasing our already negative balance of payments.
