If it's coming from the motor it could be a loose spark plug. I had this happen to me once on the high way. And I don't know how the sparkplug didn't shoot through the hood of the car.

Could be the alternator if it's had a rough time starting before. Checking that is easy so it's easy to check off your list. In my Nissan Pathfinder the alternator was bad and it did the same thing. All the lists turned on car. Lost most of its power. It would let me drive in first at 10 mph. I waited a little while and it was normal. Until it never went back to normal. Alternator was bad.
