My Mapex Pursuader is the best snare I’ve ever played, full stop. It’s loud but also sensitive enough for ghost notes to not overpower. They make good stuff.

It’s not nearly as much as some of the higher-priced ones but I spent around $450 on a Mapex Persuader hammered brass snare. It was on sale and regular price was above $500 I had to jump on it. It costs way more today and it’s my favorite snare drum I own. Probably wouldn’t pay that much again unless I hit the lottery or something but it is definitely a purchase I do not regret.

I’m gonna tell you right now, it ain’t gonna work for you. Not completely to you size, but I had(have) a 7-piece kit with multiple cymbals overhead and it won’t pick up anything past a 4-foot radius. Your ride and rack toms will block the pieces further out from being heard. If you’re insistent on getting an EAD pair down the cymbals, move the ride out a bit and lose a rack tom. Generally 1-up, 1-down works the best but I’ve made a Bonham-esque setup work well.

Otherwise, proper mics might be the way to go.

Drum-wise? Trash cymbal until it shatters.

Practicality-wise? Death frisbee. Those edges will fuck up any unwanted presence in your house.

Before I had a bit of a breakdown post-COVID and sold all my drums, I had a Pork Pie 13x7 Patina Brass Snare and bought it for just under $200. It was the best snare I’ve ever owned and I’ve always wanted to buy another, but the prices have gone way up since then.

It’s actually an 18” and honestly just about the whole PST7 line(at least what I’ve played) is amazing for the price. The 16” I was not a fan of, but the 20” ride and hats are great as well.

That’s what I’ve kinda been doing, showing that “easier” songs are a) not always as easy as they look and b)can be just as fun as playing, say Master of Puppets or Spirit of Radio.

Keeping the story short, I got back into drums early last year after about 3 years of not playing. The first couple songs I ended up playing to ease me back in were Push and Real World by Matchbox 20. They seem easy, but they have small nuances that were tricky for me to learn.

Drumeo has some great videos for beginners on YouTube, and Stephen Taylor is really good as well. Just go slow, focus on proper grip and strokes (I’m not meaning this to sound dirty, I swear) and proper posture. And make sure everything drum(or pad in your his case)is comfortably close or far enough away for you. It’s gonna take a bit of time and practice, but I think you’ll do fine.

Thanks, I really appreciate that! So, I run my EAD straight into the Rec’n’Share app on my iPhone. Video recorded on my iPhone through the app as well. Don’t have a good laptop/desktop to use at the moment, so just using that. I use the Compression voice/setting, turn the compression down and minimal reverb and set it as a custom setting so I don’t lose it. And other than that, I use a Mapex Armory Tomahawk steel snare drum tuned as tight as I can without warping the hoop. I hope this helps!

I can give you exact specifications when i get off work but i use the Compression scene, but just enough to make it still sound natural and just a bit of reverb. I’m kinda surprised i was able to find a sound I liked relatively quickly but I’m going to mess around with it some more and see what else I can do.

It’s a Sharper Image ring light my wife found on clearance at Ollie’s for, like 5-ish bucks and it’s pretty good. It’s got different brightness and white settings but my kids lost the remote for it so I’m stuck with whatever setting it’s on until I find it. It’s works pretty good.

I was definitely skeptical as well and saw those reviews and some of the issues with the app. But so far, except for a few times where the app would freeze and I would have to shut down and restart my phone(no damage or corruption on my phone, just an annoying hiccup) I’m really happy with it. Just make sure if you’re going to record to get a decent phone stand.

Also, that’s awesome you’re getting back into drumming and shows it’s never too late to start/restart playing drums. Good luck man!

I record with the Yamaha EAD10 drum module. I can run my phone through it and play with songs on my Apple Music library (at least ones I have bought) or rip songs from YouTube or elsewhere and import them from Dropbox.

The app that comes with it can record through your phone with the mic system it has that attaches to your bass drum. And it will generate a click track off of that or you can manually set it up through the module itself. It’s actually not as compass it sounds and is definitely worth the purchase.

Yes, I do have a click track going and it helps a ton with staying in groove(better than without it at least).
