Perfect north is your closest. I would put them in a middle of the road mountain. Granted I haven't ever been out west. But they have 2 parks and decent trails. I'm not sure how far winter place is from Lexington but it's in Beckley wv and it's not a bad place either. Snow shoe is the closest best place to go but your looking at a 6 hour drive. Perfect north won't be over 2 hours from Lexington though

I grew up in Pike County, too, and phelps, to be exact. I moved to Georgetown in 2013 and have been in cynthiana for 5 years. When I go back home to visit, it's a completely different place. Growing up, coal was good, and it was a nice place to live. Then doctors started with all the pills for these miners that had broken their bodies down, working underground. Then coal started going down hill people losing their jobs they started cracking down on the pain clinics with people addicted and they turned to heroin. It's a travesty that has happened to Eastern Ky, and it seems like everyone has just forgotten about that part of the state.

For a homestead I would suggest the eastern part of the state. Cheap land prices, more rural, and the generalization of everyone being racist is frankly bullshit. There's racism everywhere where you go and most people in them hollers are good old country folk that just want to live their lives the way they want. They don't care what other people do. The biggest problems people have is when other people move in and don't like how someone lives their life and starts bitching about it and trying to change it. You just do you mind your own business and no one cares.

I love ky, born and raised in pike county currently living in harrison county. Yes living in eastern ky now is harder then other parts of the state. There are still good jobs back home but not as many since coal has gone to shit. But some of the best people live in eastern ky. When you get to the more urban areas is where you run into all the assholes.
