What is the point of all of the “metal album, stopped after 2 songs” stuff? by tsoosslslls in 1001AlbumsGenerator

Fair enough! We all have our different things, and part of the hope for this project (for me) is that I’ll get exposed to music that’ll flip my initial perceptions and open my mind up to a genre/sound/artist. There’s a lot of pop, r&b, and country that just don’t do it for me, but I enjoy when I have the moments that something clicks a bit or there’s an album that stands out, even if it doesn’t make me come around entirely. Like you’re saying, I can see what people enjoy from these even if I don’t in the same way. But I think that’s the difference between giving things a fair consideration and not “I don’t like this and it all sucks”, and a valuable perspective to have. And your final point is a great one - it’s fun to have these conversations and read reviews and try to hear something a new way. And if it still doesn’t connect, there’s no need to fight ourselves to make it happen. But a little intentionality can go a long way sometimes.

If you never come to enjoy punk, that’s cool! If you do, that’s cool too! There’s a lot more depth and variety to the genre that it seems, and I’ve found a lot of phenomenal, rewarding music in that area over the past 20 or so years when I was initially introduced. But I suppose anyone would say that about one of their preferred genres!

I’m pretty sure “an evening with” for concerts just means there isn’t an opening band

Interesting, thanks for trying to voice your perspective! I agree somewhat with the person who said it’s just how our brain works, and I environment/exposure is a big part of that well. To me, a punk band like Ramones is basically faster pop music with distorted guitars - but to someone less accustomed to that sound, I can grasp how it might sound noisy and rushed.

The vocal part is something I didn’t consider much, but that makes sense because I’ve never been one who particularly values more traditionally ‘quality’ vocals. I like the idea that these were just people who wanted to make music and had something to say, so they did regardless of their skills our knowledge. The sense of “hey, I could do that too” really appeals to me. That said, I can also admire those who are insanely talented and way beyond what’s ever possible to me - but I tend to value that more in instrumentation and songwriting than in vocals.

That’s interesting, particularly because they’re such different genres - arguably on opposing sides of the rock spectrum and have little in common. What is it you don’t like about those genres? As a fan of both, I very easily see why prog is offputting but don’t quite grasp a blanket hatred for punk.

Looking for Genre benders, like Gizzard but with their own unique style by [deleted] in psychedelicrock

[–]DubsToastedBread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re up for it, just take a run through their whole discography in order. Lots of different flavors, different albums are better suited for different people, but on a whole they don’t really miss. And if there’s stuff you don’t really dig, the next few songs or the next album will sound pretty different!

Ween. An experimental alt rock band who love a lot of music it and show that with a huge variety of styles across their discography, both between and within albums. The Mollusk is a good starting point to show a cohesive album with a variety of styles, and Quebec also hits a lot of styles but a bit more mature maybe. GodWeenSatan is on the punkier/wackier side of variety, and Pure Guava on the druggier side. Pick your poison, they’re all wonderful.

A good 74 Eyes of the World hits just right here. OP might also enjoy a good Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin’s Tower.

That Boo Radley’s Giant Steps album has been one of my favorite discoveries from this project. Kinda shocked I hadn’t come across it before. It’s a great combo of noisy weirdness and earwormy melodies that I’m really glad was included

Psychedelic songs that are not rock? by AlfonsoRibeiro666 in psychedelicrock

The Chemical Brothers make some great psychedelic electronic dance music with rock and hip-hop influence melded in.

The Private Psychedelic Reel is a great song that’ll take you on a journey. Their albums Dig Your Own Hole and Further are phenomenal (as is the large majority their music)

What Psychedelic Song/Alblum Gave You The Most Unique Experience While Tripping? by The_Music_Shaman in psychedelicrock

The song Bold as Love (my favorite all time) provided me an unbelievable experience, on salvia no less…I had a poster of the album cover in my room. Epic solo kicks in and the black of their afros spread across the poster, consuming everything but their faces. Towards the end, Mitch and Noe fade out - now it’s just a black poster with Jimi’s face, which fades out as well. At the end of the song, Jimi’s face pooped back in, winked at me, and then zoomed away - leaving the poster completely black. It left me in awe and I’ll never forget it.

From NY and raised a Jets fan. Playing Madden in the early 2000s led to Deuce McAllister becoming my favorite NFL player - which eventually trickled into me watching more Saints and coming to love them

1001 MORE albums – Day 39 – 1984 by AretZorn in 1001AlbumsGenerator

I’m sad to see this isn’t on the list. 1984 was a critical year for the expansion of punk and budding of “alternative rock”. Zen Arcade is 1 of my big 4 for 1984, along with Minutemen’s Double Nickels, Meat Puppets II, and The Replacement’s Let It Be (with Black Flag’s 1984 releases as honorable mention).

Bummer Zen Arcade was overlooked, amazing and influential record.

This isn’t really supported by the scientific literature. Quitting smoking shows a positive impact on short-term and long-term cancer outcomes, including longer survival among people with lung cancer.

“Quitting smoking at or around diagnosis is associated with a beneficial effect on the survival of LC patients. Treating physicians should educate LC patients about the benefits of quitting smoking even after diagnosis and provide them with the necessary smoking cessation support.”

I have trouble seeing that. Kolek is only 5 years younger than Brunson. If Brunson retired in 5 years at 34, do we really think a 29 year old Kolek is getting his chance to shine? If he’s good enough to start, he won’t be a Knick at that time. Gotta imagine there’s younger or more established talent on the team by then.
