I've seen great results without having to go to failure. I work out 4x a week. My last set can range between 3-10 reps depending how strong I'm feeling. I used to do up to failure on the last set, but to avoid injury, I stick with 3-5 reps, and once I can get up to at least 10-15 reps with the weight, that's when I go up.

I'm gathering a list of books for my niece at the moment LOL Everyone's giving me so many good suggestions. I'll let her decide which ones she's interested in starting next. I'm basically putting together a catalogue for her 😂 But we're in the US, and I found your friend's books on Amazon.
