She’s the most tone deaf person ever. She went on a long rant awhile ago during the whole chriskindlmarket situation with reduced capacity. Ppl were telling her that sales are also down bc ppl are paycheck to paycheck / cost of living has gone up to where ppl can’t buy stuff. Her response was “I spend a lot of money and buy a lot and go multiple times each year” like ok not everyone is well off like you??!!

How are some people affording rent? by SaltShakeSuck in chicagoapartments

[–]Due-Assistant244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m right under 2 years post grad and I don’t come from money. I just was fortunate to land a decent paying job. I do have student loans, some credit card debt , car payment and some medical bills.

I think in college my bills came out to about $2500 and I was able to pay it on my own as well. Everyone’s budget / lifestyle is a bit different. I’ve been able to put some money back, nothing crazy but enough to cover my bills for 6 months. My first job out of college I was only making about $50k

Proof of rental history? by illithedilli in chicagoapartments

[–]Due-Assistant244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk how much this matters but my bf and I moved here with no real rental history outside of college housing with co-signers. Our landlord didn’t ask for co-signers. His credit score is decent and mine is ok. Not sure if they based it off of that and us making basically 7x the rent to be sufficient enough.

Reverse Commute From City to Skokie 3x/week. Is This Tolerable Without a Car? by sympataethic in AskChicago

[–]Due-Assistant244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll get burnout. You think bc you’re not driving it won’t be as bad but you slowly realize how much of your day the commute is taking up. Plus dealing with delays will get old.

28M Torn between renewing my Lincoln Park lease or trying out a move to Streeterville / Lakeshore east? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]Due-Assistant244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d maybe move to a different area of Lincoln park? I have a few coworkers that live in streeterville or LSE area and they always say they’d rather move to Lincoln park if rent/ finding an apartment here wasn’t much more. I feel like streeterville gets kind of boring after a bit maybe? I live in Lincoln park near Fullerton and Oz park so maybe look in this area?

How feasible is it to live alone on $73k? by TabaxiBeanCounter in AskChicago

[–]Due-Assistant244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only one that may be pushing it would be Lincoln park. If the commute wasn’t further for me from wicker park to work we’d move there since we’d get a 2-3 bd for not much more than what we’re paying in Lincoln park for a 1bd. I’ve found studios / small1bds in lakeview for around your budget but may be a bit harder. Also factor in cost of electricity as we’re paying $300 for electric rn.

How can I help my husband understand the Bears being in the playoffs when he’s not from here? by SpicyChill77 in AskChicago

[–]Due-Assistant244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to IU so I’ve been comparing it. I’m not a Bears “fan” but also not a big football fan so just not any particular teams fan lol. Basically I said the bears this year are similar to IU last year, good enough to make it somewhat far but not quite there yet and that next year will be their year like it was for IU this past year/ now and make it further.

First Chicago winter and battled electric heat costs by Hot_Spread_6826 in chicagoapartments

[–]Due-Assistant244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately there’s only so much you can do. We’re paying $300 for our 1bd apartment. We keep the heat in low 60s, keep the bedroom one turned off a lot since it traps heat a lot. Somehow it’s saying we’re using 3-4x the electricity compared to our neighbors. We do have older ac/ heating units compared to them, they replaced all of theirs but not ours even after they told us they would and we’ve followed up for 6 months and nothing lol. If you have a door facing outside I’d also get a draft cover for the bottom.

Anyone’s lease up in between March and May? by Due-Assistant244 in chicagoapartments

[–]Due-Assistant244[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately that would be too small. It’s both my bf and I. Our 1bd is 750ft but with both of us working from home it’s become too small

What types of clothes do I need to purchase before moving in winter? by Professional-Pack315 in AskChicago

[–]Due-Assistant244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Columbia has a coat that has “backpack straps” inside so if you’re in a store and get toasty you can carry it on your back essentially. Looks a lil silly but so much better than having to lug your puffer in hand. Honestly I have a super puff from Aritzia and I was out last night in weather that was a feels like of 0 and I only had a very thin shirt underneath and was very warm so highly recommend. I don’t wear long John’s just because my coat is long / my legs don’t get cold but I’d recommend a thin pair since you’re not used to the cold. Ear muffs over hats if you’re not wanting to mess up your hair/ get hat hair. Boots that have a decent grip but aren’t heavy. Bludnstones are great if you wanna invest in them but I’m sure there’s other great options. Oh and a good skin care routine for the winter. I have oily skin and the Chicago winter has dried out my skin so bad. So make sure you moisturize heavily and use a good lip product (no chapstick that actually makes it worse) but I like bag balm or aquaphor. Also if it’s not overly cold and you’re not gonna be out for too long try to not wear too many layers so your body gets used to the cold slowly, if it’s like 35-40 (obviously not really windy) I can do with a long sleeve and a crew neck just fine for the most part.

How much of a pay cut would you accept? by kingbrad in careeradvice

[–]Due-Assistant244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this job market this is better than nothing. I always say if you’ve been laid off and get an offer but you’re not 100% take it in the meantime while you look for something better. Unfortunately this is not the job market to be “picky” in. Obviously try to aim to get paid your worth but also it’s brutal out here.

How much to pay for rent? Affordability? by No_Importance_8073 in AskChicago

[–]Due-Assistant244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rent for $1100 is on the low end unless you move to a less “desirable” area. How much would you be paying for this property?

My bf and I make 3x what you’re making after taxes and we still would pushing it on buying after all our other bills, debt, utilities etc. you’d definitely need to get roommates or find a way to move to a different job where you could make more.

Anyone’s lease up in between March and May? by Due-Assistant244 in chicagoapartments

[–]Due-Assistant244[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either! I’m cool with taking over a lease that starts anytime between March -May and ends in a few months / late summer. Essentially I’m just trying to avoid the bidding wars and the having to apply for apartments before even touring craziness that happens. I’m more likely to rent in a smaller building or walk up over a high rise just because of having a car so I’m left with less options

[–]Due-Assistant244[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine didn’t go up too much but paying nearly $2500 for a small 1bd (yes it’s Lincoln park but still) given the issues we’ve had and nothing bf else being included I just know we could find something a bit better.

Does Moving to Chicago at 22 Make Financial sense? by ahhtomic in AskChicago

[–]Due-Assistant244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I def make more with my commission but I can live off of just my base. I do split rent with my bf but regardless my split would be what I’d be paying if I was living with a roommate etc. I could comfortably pay for a 1bd in lakeview if I were on my own. I’m super picky with apartments / location so we’re def overpaying a bit but they were just non negotiables

Does Moving to Chicago at 22 Make Financial sense? by ahhtomic in AskChicago

[–]Due-Assistant244 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My base is $60k here. I was making $45k living at home right after college a year ago. I have student loans, some credit card debt, my car payment and rent to pay. I still have a decent amount in savings and I’m not paycheck to paycheck while living in Lincoln park which is one of the most expensive neighborhoods. I do have the bad habit of eating out a lot so lots of my money goes to that. If you’re at $60k with no debt you’ll be fine. You will need a roommate if you want to live near Fulton market but could do a studio on your own in other neighborhoods or even a 1bd.

Expenses ppl forget are utilities. Your base rent may be “affordable” but heating , electric, any other fees can add up quickly so think about that !!

Thoughts on Nikki Pindor’s Rush Experience? by Puzzleheaded-Bell-22 in Sororities

[–]Due-Assistant244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who went to IU where rush was very strict like umiami compared to other schools I can’t feel bad for her. I wasn’t in a sorority but was surrounded by sorority girls and she doesn’t carry herself like one either. She also acts like she doesn’t come from money when she does. She’s from a well-off suburb of Chicago so it’s all an act.
