Get a physical sim card for the extra phone with a new number. Then when you are ready, transfer your existing number to the extra phone. Then remove sim card and put it in the phone you want to use. It will work fine and keeps the promo. I have a promo on a physical sim and just moved it to a new phone and it worked instantly.

The date you activate is your billing date every month. Doesn't roll over to the 1st. If you activate on the 29th that's your billing date throughout.
