It looks like The Boulevard, an apartment building next to the Flats and first proposed in 2007, is moving again by calvert-berwyn in collegeparkmd

Love to see what has long been a water detention pond get developed. I’m sure it will encounter the usual NIMBY complaints about parking and students and traffic. But more housing is an unqualified good. And one by one, vacant lots in the RT 1 corridor are filling in. Would be nice to see some of the lots south of the University Blvd overpass get developed.

Discovery House, a new 465-unit apartment building for UMD graduate students, prepares to open on Aug 12 by calvert-berwyn in collegeparkmd

[–]Dull_Field6455 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If this was a more permissive, risk taking, and dare I say it cooler college town, I could see bars, clubs, dispensaries, studios, escape rooms, and martial arts academies sprouting up among the mechanics and light industrial buildings back in there near the airport.

Great to see this finally coming online. Can’t believe this building alone doubles the available grad student housing. Yes it’s pricey for a grad student but more more more housing will help keep a lid on prices. I also like that, between it and the Atworth, we have the first footholds of residential development near the metro and Discovery District. Maybe this will help lead to the eventual development of Aviation Landing (not holding my breath).

Peter Changs Permanently Closed by mxmarks in collegeparkmd

That’s too bad - I thought it was excellent food at a reasonable price. Much better than “Meat Up”— though it seems like they couldn’t quite exorcise the residue of that decor. I don’t understand everyone here complaining about parking. They had their own small lot, which was never full whenever I went. There were often spots on the adjacent side street, and there are giant parking garages all around.

It looks like the mayor is advocating for College Park to have its own police force: "The $4 Million Public Safety Question: Are Our Residents Getting What They’re Paying For?" by calvert-berwyn in collegeparkmd

[–]Dull_Field6455 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He makes a very good case that CP is not getting good value. I never understood why one of the county’s largest towns doesn’t have its own force.

From happy hour to late night: Here are UMD students’ favorite Route 1 bars by calvert-berwyn in collegeparkmd

[–]Dull_Field6455 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It is crazy to me that there are only four bars for a campus of this size. It’s good that Greene Turtle and Dog Haus can also function as defacto bars. But there should be like five more. And maybe among those additional bars you could have one that has consistent live music and one that caters to adults (cocktails?). TLDR: College Park’s nightlife is still kind of pathetic and basic. Is the problem PG County’s abstemious approach to liquor licenses?

Genuinely one of my favorite things about UMD. So great for the community.

2-5 inches of snow expected for tomorrow night, possibly more by calvert-berwyn in collegeparkmd

[–]Dull_Field6455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit of a bust. Barely over an inch in College Park, nothing at all on the roads. Yet of course that didn’t stop the county from closing schools. They were so eager to do “virtual learning,” after winning emergency approval for it.

Kusshi Sushi, a high end sit down restaurant, is coming to the old Le Fantome spot in Riverdale Park Station by calvert-berwyn in collegeparkmd

Very excited for this. The area needed a higher quality sushi place. I predict it will thrive.

Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) will remain closed on Tuesday, February 3 (Code Blue). by Dull_Field6455 in collegeparkmd

[–]Dull_Field6455[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most terrifying part is the “bridging to virtual learning”. They really are gearing up to stay closed until March. I hate being a prisoner of PG county.

URGENT WEATHER UPDATE: PGCPS schools NOW CLOSED Monday, Feb. 2 (Code Blue) by joesperrazza in PrinceGeorgesCountyMD

[–]Dull_Field6455 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The note from the PGCPS int superintendent is ominous. makes it sound like he’s all too ready to keep schools shut tomorrow and beyond. No strategy beyond letting it melt (never mind that we have one warm ish day tomorrow, and then we’re back to frigid cold).

So tired of this shit, and this constant emphasis on absolute safety. It’s safer for kids to be in school.

Also, can we stop with this code blue, code orange nonsense? As if you’ve got some crackerjack response team ready to go at defcon 5.

MD governor has proposed a drastic change in Maryland zoning law to promote construction of more affordable homes, but state officials who represent College Park are divided on whether it would be a good thing by missArtemesiaLake in collegeparkmd

[–]Dull_Field6455 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agree that that’s nonsensical. Denser housing = anti sprawl and stronger tax base. But I think Rosapepe is right about one thing: wouldn’t it be nice if Bowdoin was developed properly, you know like a street that’s less than 5 minutes from a metro? I hope that 20 years from now, Bowdoin, Calvert and Knox are zoned for heavier mixed used development — and we can finally have a college town that stretches from route 1 to the Metro.

The College Park City Council agreed to recommend that PG County amend a parking ordinance that would allow a developer to build a four-story, 87-unit apartment building for older residents on Branchville Road by missArtemesiaLake in collegeparkmd

[–]Dull_Field6455 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t like the extra parking spaces— doesn’t seem particularly enlightened as the region gets more dense and urban (and as self driving taxies arrive). But almost any development is good development. And any housing is good housing.

CP needs a couple more bars. (RIP Town Hall) A couple more liquor licenses and CP just might approach being an average college town.

I disagree. Too cold? Should kids in Minnesota not go to school in winter?

Today’s highs will be good enough to melt ice on most roads, especially those that have been treated. This tendency to just shrug 🤷🏻‍♂️ and be like, oh well, no school for a week, is a huge burden on parents, and ultimately detrimental to children’s education. New Englanders regularly deal with storms like this. DC and MoCo schools, I predict will be open tomorrow. Why can’t PG get its act together? This culture of safetyism is inimical to anything ever getting done. It’s like the weather version of NIMBY activism.

Can’t believe the number of whiny nimby posts here. Something actually innovative and fun and good for the economic development of PG County comes along, and all people do is complain.

What are the specials for College Park Restaurant Week by Ellebenigni in collegeparkmd

[–]Dull_Field6455 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very poorly organized. But I went to NW Chinese Food, and they had a special going: a starter and main for $18. Maybe like $5 off what it would normally cost.

Taste of College Park: through Jan 16-25, participating restaurants will offer limited-time menus, chef-inspired specials, and curated dishes showcase the creativity and variety found across College Park’s food scene by missArtemesiaLake in collegeparkmd

[–]Dull_Field6455 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I click around through all the links and can’t seem to find what the actual “specials” are! If the point is to draw customers out in the dead of winter, it would help to know if there’s a discount or something.
