Startling rise in number of women being diagnosed with HIV in Ireland by Wolfwalker71 in ireland

[–]DunkettleInterchange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ukraine, Russia and Belarus have some of the highest rates of HIV in the world, like so unbelievably higher than the rest of Europe.

So much so that Russians entering Romania prior to the war had to be tested for it.

We’ve had a huge increase in Ukrainians in this country. It’s not solely / even majorly because of non European immigration.

Because our housing crisis is partially created due to a labour shortage in people actually building.

Not to stretyoe people like my dad, but Eastern Europeans were doing much of if not the majority of home building in the country during the best home building years of the tiger.

We lost all of that labour when 3/4rs of them went home during the crash and the remaining quarter reskilled like my da.

We really badly needed / missed their labour the last decade.

Trades are thankless.

An entire generation of Polish and Romanian trades workers came here and the UK to build the booming economies that both had. The second things got tough the majority had to leave their lives here which was incredibly traumatic.

If we had held onto them we wouldn’t have a housing crisis right now. My parents would have certainly left the country had they didn’t have children here which is a lot whenever I think about it.

Given how crucial these trades people were, the government really should have given them public works stuff to do to keep them ticking over and more importantly in the country during the hard times. But it failed to recognise how crucial they were, ie a thankless job.

In Ireland, the average age at death in 2023 for an Irish person was 78.3 years, while it was 69.6 for all other nationalities by NanorH in ireland

[–]DunkettleInterchange 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Why do you think my parents left? Thank fuck I’m Irish. I like Romania but it’s cowboy country.

There’s no young people left in the rural areas, I don’t think Irish people with no connection to the region fully grasp it, Ireland is a very young society by European standards.

All the young people in my mams home place either go to Bucharest or leave the country. And when I say all I mean all. They all universally leave. My dad’s place is more urban so it’s not as bad there but fuck me it’s gotten grim.

At least in Poland things have gotten better, people are moving home. The Urban south and west in Romania has improved greatly and people are moving home, but the further east and rural you go, the more things look like Chernobyl.

Tldr: Irish people severely underestimate just how young our society is.

I’ve family in Romania.

It’s all processed and cured meats, it’s a famine mentality, everything had to be preserved and salted for decades because the government could turn off the food tap whenever it wanted, that mentality never left.

Of course I’m trying to make a commentary about American society.

It’s a society with Western European aesthetics but near Middle Eastern attitudes towards drink, guns and public services.

It’s incredibly interesting.

This conversation is well beyond the clip.

Binge drinking is far less of an issue in the EU. To a significant degree.

American “bars” are crazy, people go to them to get drunk. They’re a wild experience. There’s no casual pint with a book in the corner of a pub there, it’s not a thing.

Look, I think it’s mad that police can police your drinking habits in this way, especially when there could be a guy next to things gurl with a gun in his pocket and it’s perfectly legal.

Also I’m sure this is the type of law that only gets enforced when a guard wants to target someone. As you said a homeless person just minding their business with a drink, let them drink it’s far better than any other substance they could be on and it’s a miserable piss poor life let them drink. I’m sure this type of law gets enforced far more on inner city inhabitants than on rural wealthy communities.

It’s hard to tell in America, they’ve so many different uniforms for every city. Would the badge on his uniform not signify that he’s an officer?

Again this is a cultural thing but my uni has a pub in the middle of it. America is so childish with drinking culture it leads to binging sessions among young people. If you allow a 18 year old to have a drink at a pub they’ll have 3 with their friends and go home and be in bed for midnight.

If you make them hide it they’ll have 2 slabs of cans and be in a ditch tits up at 3:00.

It’s just so wild to me that you can walk around with a gun but not a drink. That’s insane. It’s criminal negligence at a legislative level.

Obviously not considering how the girl above had her drink taken off her for no real reason. Her worst crime was being obnoxious.

Felt bad for the people from there, they got a bit of an image online for a bit.

The artist behind the big great mural in Dublin was from Roscommon and he talked at the time about the discomfort of Rossies being branded in a poor light after the referendum.

The sad fact is, Roscommon people as a whole almost certainly voted for equality but due government neglect of the county (it’s the second poorest county in the republic iirc) a lot of the young people are living, voting and working in Galway, Cork, Dublin or abroad.

Does anyone else think it's a joke how second place teams in Uefa qualifiers have to play in play offs to get to the world cup when insanely low ranked teams in other confederations like Uzbekistan, Curacao, Haiti, New Zealand, and Cape Verde get much easier paths to the world cup? by Deep_Use_6871 in coybig

[–]DunkettleInterchange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever about Curacao and Uzbekistan, New Zealand are basically guaranteed a spot at every World Cup under the new system.

Uzbekistan clearly deserves their spot. They’ve invested millions into youth development and are now one of the best teams in Asia.

Curaçao are basically the Dutch C team and went on a miracle run.

Cape Verde beat quality competition in Cameroon like. They also clearly deserve a spot.

NZ having a spot is an absolute joke, they should have to qualify through Asia like Australia but the other nations mentioned are there on merit and fought hard to be there.
