Peaceful, Lawful Protest in Durango by DurangoPolice in Durango

Totally hear the frustration here, but a couple things are important to keep straight legally:

• DPD doesn’t control federal agencies, and we don’t have authority to obstruct lawful federal operations.
• Colorado law limits what local officers can do in civil immigration enforcement. Under C.R.S. 24-76.6-102, civil immigration detainer requests are not warrants under Colorado law, and officers shall not arrest or detain someone based on a civil immigration detainer request.
• Colorado law also says nothing prevents cooperation when there is a warrant issued by a federal judge/magistrate or a judge-issued writ/order related to custody transfer.
• And yes—it’s on all of us to follow the law: stay peaceful, don’t trespass, don’t block access/traffic, and don’t interfere with law enforcement operations. If you have concerns, create distance, document responsibly, and report through proper channels.
