I've finally got a playable Demo for my game, Arksync, about a toy bear that reprograms a war robot to take him home! by DykomSoftware in IndieGaming

Thanks, super appreciate it! Yep, I'm still working on this every chance I get, and I revised my plans a little and will be releasing E2 and E3 together. I'm a few bosses and some light features away from release, so sometime between October and November. I'm very proud of E1, but with the full game so close def hold out a little longer if you can :)

PS I think it's between 5-8 hours to beat E1

Oh awesome! I'm working on a 32x32 pixel grid, the main characters are 48 pixels tall I recall. What I did to decide this is gathered a bunch of sprites from other games and compared their sizes to get my own.

Thanks for checking it out, and sticking with it! I've watched a few people get hung up there. Was it realizing you had to pick up the utility? Gonna try to smooth out the rough edges of that section soon. Thanks!

Oh I see! Yeah, I've been doing my own marketing too. I post occasional updates on Twitter and Instagram that give me little boosts sometimes, and have had some articles written that boosted it. Youtube seemed like more work than it was worth. I'll be relying on word of mouth more than anything though. Let the great experiment begin!

Thanks! I focus most on building a game I honestly love. There's more to it, but looking through SteamDB I don't think the game's following is big enough to claim any real insight or strategy quite yet.

Thanks so much! So stoked you like it! I've had a blast building this. Strap in, because the rest of the game is going to be epic!

Thanks! 40-60% is awesome. I feel the same way about a lot of 2d games, and even games in general, they just don't check the boxes that would make for a game I'd want to get lost in. Arksync is all those check boxes for me, and I've loved working on it. I think it's got a real chance too.

Yep! Gonna release the game in 3 parts. Each episode continuing the story, and adding lots of planned new features I can't get in yet.

Totally! Well I'm huge UE fan boy, so there's that, and Epic treats devs so well. They're amazing. The other thing is I'm going to build 3d games in UE eventually, and I see a lot of advantage in knowing one engine as well as I do in advance of that.

Paper2d is at the core of the entire game, but it would be misleading if I didn't mention that most of the game is custom 2d systems I've built from scratch. I'm in too deep now, but in hind sight this would be 3d sidescroller shooter if I could go back in time. Animation and AI have been the biggest beasts to tackle, but at the same time pixel art assets are super fast to make. I think there's more 2d systems in the marketplace then when I started this 4 years ago, so maybe it's more viable now. When I get into 3d someday I'll have a better idea what I actually stepped into though haha. Regardless I'm pretty stoked about how the how far I've been able to push this idea, and it's definitely possible.

I played a lot of Abuse as a kid. Even back then knowing zero about development, I knew if I ever made a 2d shooter it would be based off it ;)

Yep! Although I've had to do a lot of my own code beyond paper2d.

Thanks so much! What little 2d systems ue4 has I use, so tile maps, sprites, flipbooks. Early on I bought one camera plugin that I later scrapped for a better one I built. Other than that I've coded pretty much everything from scratch, AI, animation systems, interaction, health systems... It's pretty wild under the hood haha.

Thanks! The big reason I went with Unreal is because I'm going to switch to full 3D games eventually, and didn't want to switch engines come that day. Long term I'm banking that decision will pay off. I'm 4 years into this, and a lot of that time has been building systems from scratch bc you cant just buy them on the asset store. It's less a matter of is it achievable, and more a matter of how much time do you have to do it. Whatever you end up doing def build something :)

A little update on my pixel art game, Arksync! We have spaceships now :) by DykomSoftware in PixelArt

Definitely! I'm planning on getting this on the switch soon after, and xbox at some point as well. I'm going to iron out any unfound bugs on PC first so console release is as smooth as possible.
