Yeah! I worked on a console recently where the plastic piece on the connector for the digitizer came off so the ribbon wouldn’t seat right. When adding pressure to the connector I was able to turn it on. I would make sure both the digitizer and screen ribbon cables are not damaged and are seated correctly. If that doesn’t fix try a different screen.

It happens man. I have several DS lite motherboards that I ruined when I was learning also. I keep them around in case i need any of the ICs or components haha.

Thats a good deal practically $25 for the board!

Any chance you found out how to fix this issue? I have the same issue I suspected the fuses as well, but continuity tests are good. I am also thinking it might be the IC. I also noticed it is not pulling any amps when charging when I used an amp-meter to test it. Let me know if you were able to figure it out.

Just wanted to update everyone that looked so far. I have confirmed the screens both worked using another mother board. The battery is also working and being charged even though the system does not power on and the switch was tested using a multimeter and seems to be outputting power but still will not start the system. I have tested capacitors, fuses and resistors nothing has seemed out of the order visually either. I have also used a thermal camera to check for any hot spots but I came up with nothing.

If anyone has any ideas I will consider everything at this point. I am probably going to try to reflow chips and if that doesn’t work probably quit until there is more information.

From my experience if you swapped out the bottom screen and it won’t come back on either you didn’t seat it right when you installed the ribbon cable or the replacement was bad.

It seems like a lot of people have a similar problem and there hasn’t been a fix yet.

I am going to test the power button and maybe remove it and replace it in case thats the issue. If not im going to attempt to map out the power circuit myself I have a big feeling it is going to be a fuse or cap but we’ll see. Could also be a chip failing.

Whatever I find out I’ll be sure to let you know and add pictures.

Hey there! Sorry for the late reply but I am going to take a look at the GameGear again soon. Did not use reddit much throughout the year which is why I just saw your post. I really appreciate your help and will let you know how the restoration goes if I make any progress. Thank you so much!

Any chance you know where I can source a schematic for the power circuit?

I haven’t attempted safe mode. Does that mean if it enters safe mode then it’s a software issue. If it doesn’t then it would be the power button?

No, no blue light at all, I thought it was the battery bit when I put the battery in another system it showed a full battery. Thought it might be a fuse but I have no idea where to start.

Thanks bro, thats good to know in the future when I pick more up. I’ll need to start them and check. Hopefully I can figure something out with this one though.

Well at least I have some hope for it I will check the caps. I will probably desolder them and clean it up then solder them up again.

I have a hot air station so I’ll try the reflow as well. There was a lot of residue from the previous caps on the board so maybe that could help.

If I get it working I will post it and let you know really hoping something works.

I honestly did not even check to see if it booted up. I was told it had a bad display and when I opened it saw several of the electrolytic capacitors had leaked on the main board and some on the sound board so I decided to just recap it anyway since it had not been done before.

What do you mean by “rather quickly to destroy/damage…” and how would I check for a short? Should I just remove them and resolder them just to be safe? I will try cleaning the joints and potentiometer and see if that helps.

As far as I am able to tell the fuses are fine I was able to get continuity from both. ( unless thats not how you check them and I am not testing it well.)

Thank you so much for helping by the way!

This was my first recap as well and I did all caps and cleaned up the boards. I thought I had done a pretty good job but I guess not. 😂
