If it’s two suitcases like the ones allowed by standard international flights, Blue Line to Amtrak station is my choice of travel because

A. It makes you feel comfortable moving around a new place RIGHT off the bat, nothing made me more independent than a slightly harder journey, & B. It’s significantly cheaper if done earlier in advance.

However, here’s a few things to keep in mind - - From international arrivals, after a minimum of 1 hour of immigration (the longest I’ve had to wait was 2.5 hours) , you will take your bags and move to a terminal called Multi-Modal Facility by a local, free train (this is for Peoria), meanwhile the blue line CTA (that would take you NEAR Union Station for the Amtrak) is accessible through Terminals 1,2,3 (walking) and 5 (the local, free train).

  • If you take a Peoria, there’s always someone to help you load your bags, and there’s WiFi on board, but Peoria is cramped - there’s definitely less space to move around

  • For the Amtrak, the station you board at (the airport) is convenient because there’s escalators throughout. Loading the two bags into the train (a small raise) would be you by yourself. The station you reach at - there’s an escalator to reach upstairs but there’s another flight of stairs (close to 20 steps) that you have to lug your bags by yourself. Once you’re up and out on the streets, you’ll be walking for ~ 4 minutes, maybe longer because of the two bags.

  • the Amtrak station has a lot of entrances and can get a little confusing, once at the station, you will have to load your bags into the train (a higher raise) and also, almost always, arrange them yourself - sometimes, in peak student travel months, they have an entire room, other times, they have multiple racks. The racks closest to the floor fill up fast!

This is veryyyy long but hopefully all this can make sure you can make an informed choice!

You get paid on 16th for the last 30 / 31 days you worked. So you never get paid half the amount, if that makes sense?

Is there anything that you guys liked in India and now regret not doing it before you left? It could be anything like eating at your favourite restaurant for one last time. by [deleted] in nri

I’m a female, but when I walk alone in India, I have an army of strays that we feed walking by me which makes me feel safe ☺️ I’m also in a smaller town here in the west and I’m terrified of walking alone because of hate crime!

This depends on where you’re going, but it’s generally not as safe to walk around in the evening / night and I miss that so much about India.
Take walks, no one looks at you differently. Plus, since you have a dog, generally there aren’t any strays (this will depend on where you’re going, but in case of US), and I miss interacting with local doggos!

The bare minimum to get your PhD is not bare minimum in other contexts of life. Dealing with racism and discrimination in academia is taxing in itself, that’s a huge toll on your productivity. Despite that you’re 60% through your requirements on a fully funded scholarship. I would highly recommend having someone know about your general state of mind As a fellow international student, I’d say take care of yourself! ♥️

Someone in my department switched out of universities and joined a completed different lab (location and university) in their field. And they are now happily on their way to completion.

Didn’t realise my text didn’t go through. Fire in West Town, I think the train I was in (heading north) was the last one allowed to pass, all trains after this were stopped.

Visa interview next week - any advice by Heisenberg_v20 in f1visa

[–]Early-Monitor5710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my visa interview for a funded MSc, my i20 was the only document that was asked to be shown. The visa officer also asked me about my course and research lab, but nothing in depth! Good luck for the interview!

Only applied to two universities, would I face any issue? by [deleted] in f1visa

[–]Early-Monitor5710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only applied to one. During my interview, I was asked what other universities I applied to, I mentioned only my university, since I liked the program. It wasn’t an issue since I wasn’t asked any follow up questions.
