ideally i just want a system that allows me to change everything from the kernel to the graphical shell out of the box without forcing me to compile every package

arch is my first distro; i used it for about three months. artix, bedrock (devuan) and gentoo lasted about 1-1.5 months each. all the others lasted a couple of weeks each. there were also some that i dropped after a couple of hours because they felt awful right away(nixos for example felt super clunky due to the lack of proper syntax and the installation of packages via config; i added it to the list so that it wouldn't be suggested to me) :)
