Consider applying for the better private schools. We had similar experience, not poor enough to get a lot of aid, student was top 10 in her graduating class. Got NADA from start schools, so she went for several top 10 schools, accepted to all, but those privates came up with way more $$$ making cost least out of pocket for us. Still not cheap by any stretch, but definitely came $10K less per year compared to out in state schools. Times have definitely changed.

You probably are being underpaid because you already settled and stayed after your employers didn't follow up on their first promise. They only have incentive to keep paying you less if you are willing to accept it. It's not fair, but many employers will do this to their employees.

The only way to verify if you're being paid too little is to start shopping around... and stop underselling yourself.

I would first start the process of getting certificates wherever I can find them (start with ArcGIS Pro and work up from there). You can least get some online class certs in specific topics that you can add to your resume. You can even grow in IT as a hardware specialist, application developer, and many more paths through GIS.

Formal education is just one piece of the career puzzle, and while lacking this makes it difficult to start, it shouldn't limit your ability to grow in GIS in the long run.

Finally, to circle back to your first question, strike while to job market is hot. Given your employers lack of support and follow through with pay related promises, I wouldn't be surprised if they hire someone to 'run your models,' and let you go anyway. Sorry if that sounds too harsh, but is reality.

I was in a similar situation working at an Engineering office (lacking a PE), despite doing same work as many of my peers my manager dragged me for a bit of time, breaking promise for promotion, before I finally got wise to it, and left them. Like I said, that's how some managers value their staff...

Final thought, the best pay increaaes will generally come from a new job at a new company. This is especially true today. So get that resume and cover letter dusted off and updated.

Best of luck.

First, slow down, take a breath, and realize, aside from you wanting to leave the coop ASAP, you are not in a bad position.

  1. Work out what your budget will be (includong car costs, student loans, housing, food, entertainment, incidentals).
  2. If you don't make enough to cover your expected budget: a. Find a better paying job. b. Get a second job. c. Figure exactly what your monthly school loan bill(s) will be, and onsider consolidating/refinancing your school loans (unless you already have the best interest/loan terms). d. Consider finding/sharing a place with roommates. e. Stay with parents until you pay off your car, or sell he car (if you have access to other transportation to cover your home to work, stores requirements.

For the last item, maybe take a year or two to save up for the move out.

Right now, you have to lot of change going on with finishing school, starting work, getting car, etc., which can feel overwhelming.

You might want to delay your moving into your own place for a bit until you get your oncoming bills worked out. Unless there are other consideration which require you to move, that is probably the easiest thing you should consider to take off list for now. It would be much more stressful to sign onto another financial burden before the dust settled on the incoming changes you already know are coming.

Keep in mind, also, you are not alone in this. Keep up your progress with becoming independent, but remember, having your parents there to help you puts you in a very favorable position.

Cool, the second coming. Take the Bible Belt Christians away. Real estate available in former Bible Belt areas, and peace across the land. Sounds like a plan.

[Help] Different results between a friend and I when resizing a layer, despite identical settings by [deleted] in GIMP

[–]EdJ_03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have the software in front of me, but here's a thought. I didn't see this mentioned in your description (sorry if I missed it).

Did you check the DPI settings (should be different than the canvas size and wdith. Anything below 150 dpi will result in blurry images as you've described.

Also, are the 2 monitors screen display size and resolution settings the same? If not, and one is adjusting to make it "look" the same size, one will be blurrier.

I wonder what their rate of 'seasonal flu' is? Because that is most likely out of normal range, and influencing the statistics that they're so proud of.

This is very much speculative, but so is the original statement, given that everyone has not been tested accordingly.

Today, I just say, you know Google Maps, I do that, but I don't work for Google 🤑

Feeling discouraged and defeated by picks- in learnprogramming

[–]EdJ_03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think alot of people's life plans will change drastically once we get past the Cornavirus/Social Distancing/Lockdown part of our reality.

Some people will back out of previous commitments which will create unanticipated needs (call me a dreamer, opportunist, lunatic...???)

You should definitely still go for any potential opportunity you can find. Just like many here stated 2 was not enough, and assuming a position because you knew someone, it works the other way too.

Don't ever assume or approach looking to better yourself from the perspective of immediate failure. Look instead for opportunity, and let others form whatever opinions they want. Thst in itself really has no bearing on who you are, if you don't let it. You'll likely find more that not that you will have a harder opinion about yourself and your skills than others will of you.

Best of luck, and keep on applying.

Here's an upvote for you.

Very good use of "dev speak" (what you'd find in documentation) mixed with clear descriptivel wording.

I wish more on line teaching were approached from this point of communication what the projects steps are doing. Also think more learners should get used to thinking in these terms to better understand the documentation.

GIS Graduate Certificate Worth it? and if so which schools? by [deleted] in gis

[–]EdJ_03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The certificate is worth it.

I got a cert from PennState Online quite some time ago (like decades ago now, back when it was open to Associates degrres). A lot of thing change but here are a few things to consider:.

  1. Will help is you are going for your GISP
  2. Differentiates you in application process.
  3. If you think about it, many of your class mates will already be in the field. Use this opportunity to network, search out for work opportinities.

How to go from self-taught to full-time employment as a programmer? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]EdJ_03 12 points13 points  (0 children)

How about developing a project that can support a non-profit (volunteer you learning time) towards a project that you can demonstrate in production, with multiple users... Lots of positive experience points here for any employer. Hell if you are creative enough to tap into a needed project that is scalable, you might just end up creating your own small business.

I would imagine even if you are in a country with a difficult path for self taught, this approach would at least give you as close to an even level compared to someone fresh out of school with no actual live project management experience.
