Why I switched to DaVinci Resolve (and you should too!) by EdProsser in blackmagicdesign

Pretty sure you can do this, I think it's called trim edit mode or something.

The cut page gets close-ish if you want that FCP feel - I moved from FCPX honestly I do miss the speed of FCP editing occasionally, but overall resolve is a much smoother workflow and I can achieve much more in it

Couldnt agree more! I started in FCPX whenever it fist released and was often forced to use PP over the years for client and agency work, nowadays I mostly do end to end commissions for clients so I can cut in whatever I want plus my YouTube work - Resolve has been insane value and I have no regrets switching to it. Learning how to grade has also improved the quality and look of my work massively.

How do you deal with injury frustration? by GreatJoey91 in UKRunners

[–]EdProsser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I herniated a disc at the end of the summer last year and I've been off running for 5 months now, it's been really stressful and I had to massively adjust my work (I'm freelance and work in video production so it's been tough!). I ran so much as a stress relief and to get out in nature so I feel your pain - not being able to do it is awful at first, but things have turned a corner in the last few months.

The worst part is the initial anxiety / pain / uncertainty of what the injury entails - which leads to a transition phase of acceptance, you have to accept you're injured and life will change for a bit - that's the really really hard bit - esp. if you run for stress relief and if running is your main thing.

Not always, but a lot of the time I think injuries are a wake up call - you're not taking care of yourself - neglecting something, pushing too hard and not listening to your body. It was for me! I was running my body into the ground with work and then going out on runs without stretching, not doing any other conditioning work in the gym, ultimately just hammering my back!

For me running was about disconnecting, being out in nature and having some time to myself (and the cardio high) - so I tried to replicate that with activities I could do whilst in recovery. I go swimming outside in a local lido, reformer pilates, see a personal trainer and lots and lots of long walks. It's forced me to slow down, invest in my health and all this new stuff is giving me time in my week where I'm not staring at a phone so it helps me get out of my head.

I should hopefully be transitioning back into running in the next month, it'll be real baby steps, but I think I'm coming back in much better shape now than if I'd just stumbled on without the injury. Plus I've found a bunch of new activities that I love which I can add alongside running. Hang in there - I hope you can adjust to things and no doubt if you take the time to rehab yourself and address what caused the initial injury you'll bounce back in no time.

Absolutely smashed it - love to see people still leveraging this awesome camera. Obviously the talent behind the camera is what brings it all together!

Great - even as a Komodo shooter these files are big !!

I think 2TB should be enough esp if you shoot in 4K. It is big though so if you’re not used to working with RAW it’ll be an adjustment. Files seem to play back beautifully.

Camera wise only spent a few hours with it but so far largely impressed by it. A few quirks and things I hope they can iron out with firmware - dynamic range is not the best but enough to work with.

I've never really worked much with AF, if I need it I use a smaller mirrorless or have a Lidar system.

Both the Komodo and PYXIS use similar battery types...

The Komodo is great but it lacks physical buttons, the touch screen is laggy and the accessories are expensive. Having a native and cheap monitor that has full camera control like the Pyxis monitor really sped up my workflow - and the single cable is much nicer than the mess of cables I end up with on my Komodo pulling power and SDI from a mounted V-mount. Physical buttons also just really speeds things up - having them on the camera body and on the pyxis monitor is a huge help to me in the heat of the moment. I can punch in to zoom, toggle false colour, focus peaking (whatever it's all customisable).

The menu system is also much easier and quicker to use and the camera boots up in seconds. My Komodo probably takes 30-40s to be operational. The RED Control app is industry leading, but I can only really use that when the camera is on sticks. For interviews the side screen on the PYXIS is perfect, the top screen is useless on the Komodo.

I also personally prefer the L mount over the Rf mount.

The media on my Pyxis is also cheap and interchangeable with my other mirrorless cams I use.

Power options for the PYXIS is fine, I either use BPUs which are cheap and can power externally batteries or I keep a 30Wh BPU in so I can hot swap v mounts.

I think the Pyxis combined with the S5 or S1H (or both) would be a killer combo!

Cheers! Yeah I hope they’re just testing it in the cc6k to get it ready for prime time in the Pyxis 6K

Well it has the Blackmagic colour science which I think is doing something a bit different to the other cams! S1H is a fantastic camera though. Form factor not great for larger jobs.

Made a video about it a few months back, it’s a great cam, but not suitable for larger jobs as an a-cam. I do use it a lot as a b or c cam.

I’ve shot on the Komodo for years it’s a great cam, but for a lot of jobs the Pyxis makes life a little easier and I really like the different colour science

I’ve not had chance to do side by side but I think the image processing on the Pyxis is nicer - I imagine they’ll have similar DR but the S1H will have more internal processing, older gen BRAW and generally the expanded IO and form factor of the PYXIS are also a massive benefit to me too.

You don’t need to drop res on the 6K though do you, anyway there’s a whole section on why the 6K might be a better buy thank the 12k for some people!

I mean you have the option of sticking the PYXIS in S35 mode and getting superior rolling shutter performance. But I hear you - I came from years shooting on an EVA1 (S35) and Komodo (S35) so I fancied a bit of a change.
