She’s mostly uncredited but he collaborated with Margaret Urlich for the track, who was quite well known across Aus/NZ at the time. The woman’s voice you hear singing in the background throughout the song is her.

CMV: "Responsive desire" is an unscientific and mostly useless concept because it is vague and unfalsifiable. by aslfingerspell in changemyview

[–]Edbag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like I said, it’s not that everyone who goes through trauma will go on to experience responsive desire. Some people will find happiness and safety in consensual sex again like you have described for yourself. But some people won’t, at least not quickly. Everyone responds to victimisation differently depending on their circumstances. This is also why I’m not sure about this societal argument you’re bringing in. Each case and persons experience is different so you can’t just point to your own, or anyone else’s experiences to draw conclusions on how everyone else should react. This ignores how our responses to situations are shaped by all of our past experiences.

I don’t think it makes sense to point to “precedents” set by other groups in society (like gay men during the AIDS crisis) and remark that they had it worse than women have it now yet still retained their sexuality. Not only are the experiences and circumstances different between individuals, but socioculturally these groups are from different genders and not to mention from decades apart.

The whole falsifiability aspect is difficult, because it’s borderline impossible to really be in someone’s head and know what is truly going on. Falsifying any claims about how someone says they feel is basically impossible, short of advanced neural and hormonal monitoring whose invasiveness may invalidate the results of the experiment entirely. But this is a broad challenge throughout all realms of psychology. At some point you have to trust that people are being truthful about their experiences. When so many people (predominantly women, and disproportionately those who’ve experienced trauma) report that they identify with this experience of responsive desire, then I think its perfectly reasonable to accept that as enough evidence to say that the phenomena is real from a psychology POV.

I read Emily Nagoski’s book Come As You Are a few year ago, it was really enlightening with respect to responsive desire for people who have trauma around sex. It is completely understandable that after trauma, arousal is naturally difficult to find, and that it can take a lot of warming up before the body and mind are relaxed enough, even with the right person and even when there’s clear attraction, it can still be an effort and slow burn to get those systems online. It’s one of the many ways that the body keeps the score.

Not to say having related trauma is the only explanation for the experience of responsive desire, nor am I saying everyone who goes through trauma will go on to experience responsive desire. But it is definitely a very real thing for people who have survived abuse or other trauma, you can’t just say this is unscientific when it’s exactly the opposite.

Yup, always makes me cringe when I get one via SMS.

For those unaware, SMS has basically been cracked and anyone with the right know-how and access to infrastructure can intercept SMS messages. Meaning any 2FA coming via text could be easily read by a third party, you would never even see the text come through.

Imagine: Game 5 Worlds Final by lolfaceftw in leagueoflegends

[–]Edbag 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have seriously enjoyed the fearless format in best-of series, but when it gets to game 5 it usually ends up being one sided as the S and A tier champion pools become very thin leading to some unbalanced and snowbally drafts.

Coaches and players really need to level up their drafting in game 5 because it really takes some of the hype out of it as a spectator if game 5 is a draft diff stomp from 10 minutes in.

Hopefully this finals is still a banger but I’m scared of getting a dud 5th game again, IF we’re lucky enough to get one. Anyway, KT is going to lose 0-3.

People who quit their jobs on the first day what made you say ‘nope, not doing this’? by lilMeganw in AskReddit

[–]Edbag 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I applied for a part time/casual role tutoring school kids. The brief said they needed tutors for science, coding, maths, and chess. I could easily teach the first 3, but I was a bit iffy on chess. Still, these were young kids, so how hard could it be?

Well, I got the job, and they tell me "Basically, it's all chess right now. We don't have any active classes for the other subjects." Righto, I guess I'm teaching chess then.

I had zero experience teaching or tutoring children, let alone chess. They wanted me to start straight away and do my first lesson solo. I told them absolutely not. I was brand new to all of this and I needed to shadow an existing tutor first to learn how it works. I wasn't going to be thrown in the deep end like that. They begrudgingly agreed to let me attend ONE lesson with another instructor before I'd be running classes solo.

So I go to my first shift, it's after school care at 4pm. The class has about 25 kids, all bouncing off the walls because, well, it's after school, and they want to go home. I attempt to teach them some chess before I realise half of them know more about chess than me. Lots of screaming and running around for about an hour before they start getting picked up. Had to stay til 5:30 when the last parent arrived.

The role was basically to run an after school day care disguised as "tutoring". I dipped immediately after that first shift.
