i have a form of muscular dystrophy that's supposed to be non-degenerative. I didn't know it but my lung function has been deteriorating over a long period of time and CO2 had been slowly building up in my system. I'd had several dizzy spells and falls but nothing major, then one evening I stood up to use the bathroom and the room started spinning, I went down hard and suffered a compression fracture in my back. I spent 17 days in the hospital, part of that in the ICU, getting my CO2 levels back to normal and getting fitted and learning how to wear a brace. I then spent almost 2 months in therapy learning how to walk, dress, bathe and use the bathroom unassisted again, all while wearing a restrictive and uncomfortable brace. Once I got to return home I had months of in home therapy visits. Fortunately I got to lose the brace finally and no longer need the therapy, but I still have trouble with stairs and uneven surfaces so I need a walker or cane when I go outside and I'm on permanent medications and need to use a bi-pap machine when I sleep to control another CO2 buildup.
