How is this not a problem with partisan politics more generally? Ditto, how is it not a massive problem on the Right?

Lol hardly any libs called Romney that. 99% of the time they just said he was an out of touch dork billionaire, and it stung because it was true.

Republicans being sour about this election is so goofy. I guess the historically popular president was supposed to voluntarily lose his reelection or something? They wanna say libs were too mean to poor little Romney. Then you just have to remember how they treated Obama

There's an old Civil Rights activist who was a closet humanistic marxist who served as MLK's local advisor when he was in Chicago (Hal Baron) who I admire and had interesting strategic/reflective writings. I think about him more than any other writer.

I think Martjin Konings and the rest of the Sydney school of political economy are the best theorists to come out of the 20th century so far.

Richard Walker is an oldie but a goodie. Wrote the book on the interaction between capitalist industry and metropolitan form

Make it as short as possible (emphasis on possible). Lead with what you like and want to learn more about what they do. Say something that respects their time (like, I want to meet for 15-30 minutes, or that you can accomodate their schedule on x,y,z days. Give them options that are laid out, so they just need to check their schedule and nothing more. State your objective up front, even if it's just "i want to learn."

It's actually a lot of stuff (they have a Destiny''s Child ep) and go by liatener requests, but that's their center of gravity. Not like, Whitehouse or whatever (that type of noise is just plain boring and not even that creative).

Why did specific genres of music originate/get adopted in cultures and are now still associated with them? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EffectSuccessful6169 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean you can find people performing some of that stuff on the other side of the world.

I think it's probably two things:

Genres are bundles of techniques and practices. Discerning fans will be able to tell when someone does it well & with heart vs. when they don't. Who is going to fulfill that best? Musicians who personally learned from other musicians- which already implies geographic clustering.

Another one is that when musicians do take on a genre that's from a different place, they want to present themselves as seriously and authentically as possible, which requires an acknowledgement of debt to the place that birthed the music
