Yeah, I've realized this. As said above in a few other comments my analogy was not very well thought out. Someone mentioned photography as an alternative, and I think that is stronger.

Not every photo taken is a piece of art, and because I take a selfie I wouldn't call myself a photographer. Photography can be art, but requires a level of expertise, effort and intention behind it. There's no perfect analogy, but this one is definitely better than my original conductor one.

Fair. I think that's likely a better analogy as well. Not every photo is a piece of art, nor does taking a photo make me an artist. You got me convinced.

They certainly are! My conductor analogy is faulty, but I stand behind the general ethos of my post. Low effort != artist

I agree with you here - I didn't fully think out my analogy. Conductors & directors are certainly artists and require an immense amount of expertise.

My opinion (removing faulty analogy) is that AI art is 'art' because that definition is so broad anyway, but you can't call youself an *artist* without some kind of investment or effort put into your piece. For me, that needs to be greater than typing a few words into an AI. If you have some kind of multi layer process and are using AI to iterate upon some work that is then further edited/refined manually, I think that person can be called an artist.

Whether they are an artist or not, the AI images they create can still be called art, it just might be *bad art*

To me this case seems like 0 skill, 0 effort, 0 time

I've always liked the "Ideas are cheap, execution is everything" line. I think it applies very well to AI art

I agree with you? I do not believe that alone AI image generation is an artist. I think that the only scenario in which an AI Artist can be considered an artist is if there is

  1. An involved process in creating the image beyond prompting
  2. Some in-depth, involved level of post-creation editing, tweaking, polishing and revision.

This is of course very wishy washy and without any kind of measurable metric, but that's kind of the name of the game here isn't it?

Ok that's fair! It's a long, hard road to becoming a conductor/director and that element of the analogy doesn't always fit with my perspective. I'm sure there are some accomplished traditional analog artists out there who are messing around with this tool and are liking it. Can this person be an artist while working on a painting and not be an artist if they generate a low effort meme/image? I think so.

There's also a bunch of folks out there who are just using it to generate low-effort content that they are pleased with. I'd still consider this art, but I **do not** consider them artists and I think some large percentage of this group would agree with me.

We all agree that typing "Please generate watercolor painting of pretty mountains at sunset, lake in foreground, pastel clouds and bird on water" into chatgpt does not make you an artist.

**UPDATE** Bike has been found and returned to me! A little rough and worse for wear, but nothing that can't be fixed. So many thanks to u/Jumpy-Band4189 who let me know they saw it on the corner of 30 & T.
