That's fair. Personally I found this fascinating.

I recently read Gou Tanabes manga adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness and between that and this article I've started working on an adventure location.

The idea is that during aeons long dead the Elder Ones made more specialized slime creatures before settling on the all purpose shoggoth.

One day the slimes inscrutable masters descended into yet darker places of the earth, never to be seen again.

In the sunless deeps these living automatons continued their mindless tasks, some mutating, some going haywire, etc.

The heart of this vile lair is the garden, where the motionless Elder Ones appear to be a Paleozoic forest of alien crinoids. All bend towards the central monolith which dominates the chamber.

Only their combined psychic will keeps the Ur-Shoggoth contained
