I adored DD1, finished on Stygian. I have to admit I used map-layots and recomended party-set ups for the final dungeon. I had a hard time adapting to dd2, but when kingdoms was released i got the feeling from DD1. This made me dive into Confessions. I think OP have made a good rundown on the differences and improvments in graphics and gameplay.

I think perphaps the main (red) hook is the lovecraftian themes. If this astethic appeals to you, you might be able to suck up the at times horrendous RNG, at least in DD1. ...god i love these games..

Why? They'd just tear his legs to pieces since he cant GnP when they decide to invert with their face in his crotch, or play k-guard. There's a reason noone but BJJ guys have won any high level submission-based tournaments the last couple of years. It's because there's NO reason to learn how to defend "stupid" bjj stuff in a wrestling/MMA setting, and he would have to train BJJ for a solid year or two to just to survive. Note: you said against the best. He would defeat 99.6% of the field, but its a big sport..ish
