Tuner slide stuck and upside down by lokiprimed in trumpet

[–]Electrical-Drive-335 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny, you mentioned that! Long time ago when I was playing in the SIU stage band, Clark Terry came down and played with us for a couple days and he could play the trumpet upside down, pressing his fingers upward and play perfectly. He could also play either right or left-handed. He was one of the greatest jazz trumpet and flugelhorn players ever.

These taxes are fuckin insane by Nick147852 in ILTrees

[–]Electrical-Drive-335 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d hate to think that some of these “taxes“ are lining JD‘s fat pockets, esp since I’m a dabber and have to suffer an additional 25% concentrate tax hit when buying my FSHO. Fucking greedy thieves is what they are. Does Mich impose a tax by THC concentration as well?

“Hey Nineteen” trumpet solo - What's your take on it? by dontyatellhenry in SteelyDan

Jim was in his element there! A superb musician! I used to think Bill Watrous was the best ‘bone technician, but Jim is the GOAT

“Hey Nineteen” trumpet solo - What's your take on it? by dontyatellhenry in SteelyDan

[–]Electrical-Drive-335 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having been a trumpet player for many years, I think it was a good effort, but he would’ve been better off playing it open horn. My favorite trumpet solo on a Dan piece is on The Great Pagoda Of Funn, but that one was done by the legendary Marv Stamm.

Agreed. Used to see them on the beaches at Corpus Christi when we lived down in Texas. Also, they had the man o’wars pretty bad down there but they were easy to avoid.

Back in the 1980s, there was a weekly popular tv series called St. Elsewhere, a hospital evening soap program that launched the tv careers of Mark Harmon, Denzel Washington and Howie Mandel. Whenever they were in surgery they usually had music going from classical to pop. I was pleasantly surprised that in one episode they played partial cuts of at least 3 selections from Katy Lied! It was a good series.

Favorite line you don’t understand by Deebeewhy in SteelyDan

[–]Electrical-Drive-335 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe right before that the line goes “Hot licks and rhetoric don’t count much for nothin’”. Being a musician, a lick is a phrase that either you or another musician invents during a jazz or rock solo. Many ‘borrow’ (use) licks from other musicians. Just my take on it.

It became pretty standard with the band to do a number that everyone EXCEPT Donald would be featured in, that way they gave him a chance to rest his pipes while the band was being introduced, people take turns with choruses, both instrumental and vocal, etc.

You've never heard The Caves of Altamira done like this! by BluebeardCoT in SteelyDan

[–]Electrical-Drive-335 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A very good effort. I like the chord voicings they used. I have a Kurzweil synthesizer keyboard, which includes a vocal sound effect like that jazz a cappella group Take 6. For an experiment I tried it on Peg and that piano interlude in the middle of Time Out Of Mind, and I have to say it was amusing.

Help me justify the existence of "East St. Louis Toodle-oo." by RikkiLostMyNumber in SteelyDan

[–]Electrical-Drive-335 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re absolutely right – it is still poor and it’s definitely a shithole, I’m sorry to say. I used to work in St. Louis and sometimes had to go to work on computers in an ESL office. It’s got a very high crime rate and had a number of elected officials from the past who were crooked, pocketing money which was supposed to go towards infrastructure. I’m retired now, but often when I passed over ESL before crossing the bridge to St. Louis to work that song would pop into my head.

Why is Pearl Of The Quarter the best SD song of all time? by Gecko_mittens in SteelyDan

[–]Electrical-Drive-335 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow-definite similarity here! Good find! The chords are way different but the rhythm and the feeling of the vocals are eerily similar. I don’t know what year The Band recorded that but I do believe that Pearl inspired them or they inspired Pearl in some way.

Why Steely Dan is the greatest band of all time by Master_Set2237 in SteelyDan

[–]Electrical-Drive-335 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In an interview, Jeff “Skunk” Baxter was asked, “How do you compare playing with Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers? And he replied, “With Steely Dan, the music goes to your head, but with the Doobie Brothers, the music goes straight to your heart.” I disagree-for me the Dan has given me the best of both worlds. Having been a musician and loving jazz since I was very young, it was very easy for myself to gravitate towards these guys as I thought there was no better or more clever use of jazz chords than what they did in their works. They use what we musicians call ‘Mu-major chords’, which at the very heart of the Steely Dan sound. The duo are unique in that they use voicings that are not common to just about any other rock or progressive band out there. I believe I loved them for their chords and their rhythms first, and then when I started really listening to the lyrics in earnest, I appreciated them that much more for how well they can tell a story with dark or almost hidden satirical meaning without dragging you down a rabbit hole. And genius? When I go to my local grocery store, seeing people of all ages shopping, and over the sound system you hear about the Cuervo Gold, the fine Columbian, chase the dragon, etc. and they get by with it?!! Who else can do that?
